The average bathroom rug size is 20 x 30 in (about 1.5 x 2.5 ft), and the standard range runs from 17 x 24 in for a small rug up to 24 x 60 in for a vanity runner. Choose by placement: 20 x 30 in in front of a single vanity or shower, 24 x 60 in as a runner for a double vanity, and 21 x 34 in or larger in front of a tub.
There is a reason bathroom rug sizing feels confusing: two different product categories share one shelf. A bath mat is sold in inches and sized to a fixture. A bathroom rug is sold in rug sizes -- 2 x 3 ft, 2.5 x 4 ft, 2 x 6 ft runners -- and sized to a room.
Most people are shopping for the second and reading sizing advice written for the first, which is how you end up with a rug that technically fits and looks wrong. This page is the rug version. If what you want is the absorbent mat you step onto out of the shower, the bath mat size guide is the one you want, and bath mat vs bath rug explains why the two words are not interchangeable.
The full bathroom rug size chart
| Inches | Feet | Centimeters | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 17 x 24 | 1.4 x 2 ft | 43 x 61 cm | Small rug: beside a toilet, a cloakroom, a tight corner |
| 20 x 30 | 1.7 x 2.5 ft | 51 x 76 cm | The average size: single vanity, shower exit |
| 21 x 34 | 1.75 x 2.8 ft | 53 x 86 cm | In front of a standard tub |
| 24 x 36 | 2 x 3 ft | 61 x 91 cm | Generous single vanity, large shower exit |
| 24 x 40 | 2 x 3.3 ft | 61 x 102 cm | Long tub side, or a wide shower |
| 24 x 60 | 2 x 5 ft | 61 x 152 cm | Runner for a double vanity |
| 30 x 50 | 2.5 x 4.2 ft | 76 x 127 cm | Large bathroom centerpiece |
| 26 x 70 | 2.2 x 5.8 ft | 66 x 178 cm | Long runner: galley bathroom, wide double vanity |
Two notes on reading this table. Manufacturers round aggressively, so a rug sold as 2 x 3 ft is often 23 x 35 in. And bathroom rugs shrink more than area rugs do, because they are washed far more often -- expect 3 to 5% on a cotton rug over its life.
Choose by the fixture, not the room
The reliable method is to size the rug to the thing it sits in front of, then check it against the room. Not the other way round.
- Single vanity: match the rug length to the vanity width, or come within a couple of inches of it. A 36 in vanity takes a 24 x 36 in rug; a 30 in vanity takes 20 x 30 in.
- Double vanity: use a runner. Measure the full cabinet width and subtract 6-12 in so the rug does not run past the ends. A 72 in double vanity wants a 24 x 60 in runner; an 84 in one wants 26 x 70 in.
- Standard tub (60 in): 21 x 34 in or 24 x 40 in, placed along the long side so you step out onto the middle of it.
- Walk-in shower: 20 x 30 in minimum, and align it to the door opening rather than to the shower's full width.
- Beside the toilet: 17 x 24 in. Anything larger reads as filling space, and it is the one rug in the room that gets washed most.
Bathroom rug runner sizes
Runners are where most of the sizing mistakes happen, because a runner that is too long is much more obviously wrong than a rug that is slightly too small.
| Vanity / run width | Runner to buy |
|---|---|
| 48-54 in | 24 x 40 in |
| 60-72 in | 24 x 60 in |
| 72-84 in | 26 x 70 in |
| Over 84 in | Two separate rugs, one per basin |
That last row is a real recommendation and not a cop-out. Past about seven feet, a single runner stops reading as a rug and starts reading as carpet, and it is harder to launder than two smaller rugs. Two matched 20 x 30 in rugs under two basins look deliberate and wash in one load.
What size rug for a small bathroom
Smaller than you think, and for a practical reason rather than an aesthetic one. In a small bathroom the limiting factor is drying, not proportion: a large rug in a small unventilated room has the same airflow as a small one and twice the water in it.
In a bathroom under about 40 square feet, 17 x 24 in or 20 x 30 in is the right answer, and a rug you can hang over the tub edge beats a rug that covers the floor. Why dry time decides everything.
Measuring properly, in three minutes
- Measure the fixture width -- vanity, tub side, or shower opening. This is your rug length.
- Measure the clear floor depth from the fixture to the nearest obstruction. Subtract 3-4 in. This is your maximum rug width.
- Open the door and check the swing. Mark where it passes the floor and keep the rug 4 in clear of that arc.
- Tape the rectangle out on the floor with masking tape before you order. It takes two minutes and it is the only step that reliably prevents a return.
The three rugs we would buy at these sizes
Size range is a real purchasing criterion in this category, because a rug line that only comes in one size cannot solve a room.
French Connection Nellore covers 17 x 28, 20 x 38, 24 x 64 and 26 x 49 in -- the widest spread we have found in one cotton line, including two genuine runner lengths. The Company Store Company Cotton covers 17 x 24, 21 x 34, 24 x 40 and 24 x 24 in, which is the classic bath-rug ladder. Gorilla Grip runs from 22 x 19 in up to 70 x 24 in, which is the only mainstream line that reaches a true long runner on a bonded non-slip backing.
Three rug lines chosen for size range rather than for any single size, because a line that only comes in one size cannot solve a room.

The Company Store Company Cotton Bath Rug
100% cotton across four sizes, with no rubber backing to disintegrate -- the reason a plain cotton rug still beats most engineered mats.

If grip on a hard floor is the thing you are worried about, the non-slip roundup goes through the backings properly.
The long end of this chart is harder to shop than the rest of it, because very few lines publish runner sizes at all. The best bathroom runner rugs lists the sizes each line actually states, from 47 in up to 71 in.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average bathroom rug size?
20 x 30 in, which is about 1.7 x 2.5 ft or 51 x 76 cm. It suits a single vanity or a shower exit and is the size most bathroom rugs are sold in.
What is the standard bathroom rug size?
Standard bathroom rugs run from 17 x 24 in at the small end to 24 x 60 in for a vanity runner, with 20 x 30 in and 21 x 34 in as the two most common sizes.
What size rug for a double vanity?
A runner. Measure the full cabinet width and subtract 6-12 in: a 72 in double vanity takes a 24 x 60 in runner, an 84 in one takes 26 x 70 in. Past 84 in, use two separate rugs instead.
What are bathroom rug runner sizes?
The common runner sizes are 24 x 40 in, 24 x 60 in and 26 x 70 in. Choose by the width of the vanity or galley the runner sits in, leaving 6-12 in of bare floor at each end.
What size bathroom rug for a small bathroom?
17 x 24 in or 20 x 30 in. The limit in a small bathroom is airflow rather than proportion, and a big rug in a small unventilated room simply never dries.
Is a bathroom rug the same as a bath mat?
No. A bath mat is sized in inches to a fixture and is there to absorb water you step out onto. A bathroom rug is sold in rug sizes and is there to cover floor. Many rooms want one of each.
Do bathroom rugs shrink?
Cotton bathroom rugs typically lose 3-5% over their life, more if they are hot-washed or tumble dried. Buy the size up if your measurement is borderline.
