A standard US bath towel is about 27 x 54 in (69 x 137 cm). A bath sheet is roughly 35 x 68 in (89 x 173 cm). A hand towel runs 16 x 28 to 20 x 30 in, and a washcloth is 12-13 in square.

Towel sizes are loosely standardized, which means most brands land near the same dimensions and a few are noticeably off. The word "oversized" is entirely unregulated, so a listing that uses it without a measurement is telling you nothing at all.

Buying a standard bath towel when you wanted a bath sheet. At 27 x 54 in a standard towel dries you perfectly well but does not wrap comfortably around an average adult. If you get out of the shower and wrap up before drying, you want a bath sheet, and the gap between the two is bigger than the numbers suggest -- a bath sheet has roughly 60% more cloth. Buying a bath mat sized for a tub when you have a walk-in shower. The default 17 x 24 in mat is a bathtub size. If your wet zone is a shower door two feet wide plus the step-out, the floor gets wet regardless and you have bought an ornament. Bath mat sizing is covered here.

A bath sheet at a given GSM holds substantially more water than a bath towel at the same GSM, simply because there is more of it -- and takes correspondingly longer to dry. A 700 GSM bath sheet is a serious commitment in a small bathroom in a way a 700 GSM bath towel is not.

If you want the coverage of a bath sheet without the drying problem, drop the weight: a 500-550 GSM bath sheet gives the wrap and dries about as fast as a 650 GSM standard towel. The GSM guide has the full dry-time table.

Some listings say "oversized", "jumbo" or "extra large" with no measurement anywhere. Treat that as a standard towel until proven otherwise -- brands that have genuinely oversized their towels put the dimensions in the title, because it is their selling point.

Watch for shrinkage too. Cotton terry typically loses 3-5% in the first few hot washes, so a 30 x 58 in towel realistically settles around 29 x 56 in. Reputable brands quote the finished, post-wash size; the less reputable quote the loom size.

1. If you pat dry and hang it up: a standard 27 x 54 in bath towel is plenty, and it dries fastest.
2. If you wrap up after the shower: buy a bath sheet, and buy it lighter than you would buy a bath towel.
3. If you are over about six feet tall: the 30 x 58 in large bath towel is the sensible middle ground.
4. For the hand towel rail: 16 x 28 in is standard; 16 x 30 in folds better. Buy six rather than two -- here is why.
