Hand Towels

How Many Towels Do You Actually Need?

Most households own too few hand towels and washcloths, and slightly too many bath towels.

Per person: three to four bath towels. Per bathroom: six hand towels. Per household: two dozen washcloths. Most homes have roughly the right number of bath towels and nowhere near enough of the other two.

The right number of towels is not a matter of taste. It follows from how often each item can be reused and how often you are willing to do laundry, and the arithmetic produces numbers that surprise people.

The arithmetic

Each item has a reuse count and a laundry interval. Multiply them out and you get the number you need on hand.

How many of each, and why.

Note what happens across the rows: bath towels scale with people, hand towels scale with bathrooms, and washcloths barely scale at all because two dozen is already enough for most households.

The shortage is always hand towels

Nearly every household we would describe as having a towel problem has enough bath towels and two hand towels. The hand towel is used ten or fifteen times a day by everybody, never dries, and is changed weekly because there is nothing to change it to.

Six hand towels per bathroom costs very little and fixes the single most common source of bathroom smell. That is the highest-return purchase in this entire subject. Our picks.

The rotation that works

  1. Bath towels: one per person in use, the rest in the cupboard. Rotate rather than favoring one -- a towel used every day never dries fully.
  2. Hand towels: change daily, straight into the laundry basket. Six means you do this for most of a week before washing.
  3. Washcloths: one use, then the basket. Never leave one in the shower.
  4. Bath mats: two, alternated. One in use, one dry. This roughly doubles the life of both.
  5. Wash the lot together, weekly, warm, with a booster. The full method.

Guest towels

Two bath towels and two hand towels per guest bedroom, stored separately from the working stock so they stay unused and presentable. This is the one place where a heavier, plusher towel makes sense -- it is used a handful of times a year and has days to dry. More on that.

When to buy more versus when to buy better

If your bathroom smells, buy more. If your towels have gone stiff or stopped absorbing, do not buy anything -- strip them, because that is a laundering problem rather than a quantity one. Only buy better when the towels are genuinely worn out at the hems.

Frequently asked questions

How many bath towels does one person need?

Three to four. One in use, one clean, one in the wash, and a spare. A towel can be reused three or four times if it dries fully between uses.

How many hand towels per bathroom?

Six. They should be changed daily, and six covers most of a week between laundry loads. This is the item most households are short of.

How many washcloths do you need?

Two dozen per household. They are single-use, so the number is driven by how often you do laundry rather than by how many people there are.

How often should towels be washed?

Bath towels every three or four uses. Hand towels daily. Washcloths after every use. Bath mats weekly.
