Buy washcloths two dozen at a time in ring-spun cotton, and in a dark color if you use skincare actives. A washcloth is a single-use item that stains permanently -- quantity matters far more than quality.
Face cloths take the worst of everything in a bathroom: cleansing oil, makeup, benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, self-tan, hair dye. White ones stain permanently within months and no wash cycle saves them. They are also the cheapest item in the linen cupboard, and the one people most stubbornly try to preserve.
How we chose
- Sold in large packs. A fresh cloth every time is the only hygienic way to use one, and that requires two dozen, not four.
- Ring-spun cotton at minimum. Open-end cotton pills quickly on a cloth that is scrubbed rather than patted.
- 12-13 in square. Big enough to fold into quarters, small enough to dry fast.
- Honest about color. If you use actives, buy dark. Nobody selling white washcloths will tell you this.

The color rule nobody tells you
If you use benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, hair dye, self-tan or anything with a strong pigment, buy dark washcloths. Benzoyl peroxide is an oxidizer and it bleaches cotton permanently -- the white cloth you used once will have pale blotches for the rest of its life, and no amount of washing reverses it.
Dark cloths hide it. Some brands sell "beauty" cloths specifically for this in charcoal or black, and they are the same cotton in a sensible color.
Why washcloths are a consumable
A washcloth is scrubbed rather than patted, used on the dirtiest and most sensitive skin on the body, and exposed to products designed to strip and oxidize. Nothing in that description suggests a long life.
The right mental model is a kitchen sponge, not a bath towel. Buy them cheap, buy them in bulk, use a fresh one every time, and replace the lot annually. Trying to nurse four good washcloths through three years is the wrong problem to be solving.
Washing them
- Hot. 140F (60C) where the cotton allows. These carry more skin oil per square inch than anything else in the house.
- Oxygen bleach on whites, every wash. It lifts the gray without weakening the cotton the way chlorine does. The comparison.
- Never fabric softener. A softened washcloth stops absorbing, which is the only thing it does.
- Dry fully, and do not fold them damp into a stack -- a damp washcloth in the middle of a pile will smell by morning.
