A bath towel is used once or twice a day by one person. A hand towel is used ten or fifteen times a day by everyone in the house, and it never gets more than an hour to dry between uses. It is the most heavily used textile in the home, and almost nobody buys it with any care at all.
The practical conclusion is unglamorous: quantity beats quality here. Owning six adequate hand towels and changing them daily produces a better bathroom than owning two excellent ones and changing them weekly -- for hygiene, for smell, and for how long the towels last.

A washcloth or face cloth is 12-13 in square, and is a single-use item: used once, into the wash. A hand towel is typically 16 x 28 to 20 x 30 in, and hangs on a rail or ring by a basin. A fingertip towel is around 11 x 18 in and is a guest-bathroom item, not a working one. A guest towel is the same idea in a nicer cloth. The full size table is here.
Hotels use a hand towel around 16 x 30 in, which is a little longer than the domestic standard for a reason -- it folds better over a rail and gives two dry faces rather than one.
Everything that makes a bath towel go musty happens to a hand towel four times faster, because it is re-wetted before it dries. The bacterial cycle never gets interrupted. No amount of buying a better hand towel changes this; only rotation does.
A simple test: if the hand towel in your bathroom smells faintly by the second day, you need more hand towels, not better ones. If it smells within hours of going on the rail, the towels themselves have oil build-up and want stripping before you replace them.
Face cloths take the worst of everything: skincare actives, makeup, benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, cleansing oil. White ones stain permanently within months and there is no wash that saves them. Buy dark cloths if you use actives, buy them two dozen at a time, and treat them as something you replace rather than something you maintain. They are the cheapest item in the linen cupboard and the one people try hardest to preserve.
