The Best Hooded Towels for Kids, Sized by the Age They Actually Fit

Almost every hooded towel problem is a size problem. The cute one you were given at the shower stopped working at fourteen months, and nobody told you which size comes next.

For a newborn, Burt's Bees Baby's 2-pack of knit terry hooded towels in 100% organic cotton at 29 x 29 in is the plainest good answer: published fiber, published construction, two in a pack. For a bathroom that struggles to dry anything, Comfy Cubs' six-layer muslin cotton towel at 32 x 32 in is the better buy, because layered gauze dries in a fraction of the time terry takes. For a toddler who has outgrown a square, Burt's Bees Baby's 50 x 26 in woven terry towel is the next size up, and for a school-age child the Joiedomi hooded poncho at 30 x 50 in in 100% cotton covers an age range almost nobody else makes for.

Hooded towels are bought as gifts, which is why the category is sold on the animal face and almost never on the specification. The result is a cupboard with four 29 in square towels in it and a two-year-old who does not fit any of them.

So this roundup is organized by size first, because size is the thing that decides when the towel stops being used. Fiber comes second, construction third, and the hood design last -- which is the exact reverse of how these are marketed.

What actually decides a hooded towel

  1. The size, read against an age -- not a stage. A 29 x 29 in square is a newborn-to-first-birthday towel. A 32 to 35 in square gets you into the second year. Past about two you want a rectangle: 50 x 26 in or a 30 x 50 in poncho. The words 'infant, toddler and kids' appear on nearly every listing regardless of what size the towel is, so ignore them and read the inches.
  2. Fiber, because children's towels get washed more than anyone's. 100% cotton survives hot washing. Viscose derived from bamboo is softer and slicker on day one and is weaker when wet, which is the state a towel spends its life in. Bamboo versus cotton towels is the long version of that trade.
  3. Construction, which decides dry time. Woven terry holds the most water and takes the longest to dry. Knit terry is softer and pills sooner. Layered muslin holds the least and dries fastest. In a windowless family bathroom with three towels on one hook, dry time is the specification that matters most.
  4. The hood seam. Every hooded towel is a flat towel with a triangle sewn to one corner, and that seam carries the whole weight of a soaked towel every time a child picks it up by the hood -- which is how children pick them up. It is where these fail, long before the cloth wears.
  5. How many, not which one. Two per child is the floor, because one is always in the wash. This is the same arithmetic as how many towels per person and it is the reason three of the five picks here are sold in pairs.

Muslin or terry: the one real choice in this category

Two of these towels are terry and one is layered muslin, and the difference is larger than the price gap suggests.

Terry is loops of yarn standing off a woven ground. The loops are what hold water, which is why terry absorbs more per square inch than anything else in a bathroom, and the loops are also why it takes hours to dry. Muslin is a plain open gauze, layered up -- four, six or eight plies -- for bulk. It holds much less water and gives it back to the air far faster, and because there is no pile it gets softer with washing instead of matting down.

For an adult towel this site usually argues for terry at a sensible weight, because adults want capacity. For a child the calculation flips. A small body does not need much capacity, drying a child is a wrapping job rather than a rubbing one, and the towel is going straight back onto a hook in a steamy room. That makes layered muslin the technically better construction for most family bathrooms and it is why the Comfy Cubs sits where it does on this list, despite looking thin next to a plush terry towel in the photographs.

The exception is a cold house. Terry holds warmth as well as water, and a thick woven terry towel around a child who has just come out of a warm bath is doing a job muslin cannot. If your bathroom is cold and well ventilated, buy terry. If it is warm and sealed, buy muslin.

What makes a hood worth having

The hood is the only thing that distinguishes this category from a small towel, and it is the part nobody evaluates. Two things make it work. It has to be deep enough to stay on a wet head when the child moves -- a shallow triangle slides off the moment they turn around, which is the single most common complaint about hooded towels and almost always a pattern problem rather than a size one. And it has to be made of the same cloth as the towel, not a thinner lining, because the hood is drying the part of a child that holds the most water.

A hood on an undersized towel is worse than no hood at all. Once the towel is too short to reach past the hips, pulling the hood onto the head drags the bottom edge up, and you end up with a child wearing a hat and nothing else. That is the real signal that a towel has been outgrown, and it arrives earlier than most parents expect -- usually around the first birthday on a 29 in square.

Check the seam where the hood meets the towel before the first wash, too. On a well-made one it is bound or double-stitched; on a cheap one it is a single row of stitching through four layers of terry, and that is the one that opens up in year two.

Bamboo viscose: softest on day one, weakest wet

The KeaBabies towel is here because 35 x 35 in is the largest square in common circulation and the extra inches buy you roughly another year of use. It is also viscose derived from bamboo, and that deserves a clear statement rather than a footnote.

Viscose from bamboo is not bamboo in any meaningful sense: the plant is dissolved chemically and regenerated as a fiber. The result is slick, soft and pleasant, and it loses a substantial share of its strength when wet. A towel is wet every time it works. In practice that means a bamboo-viscose towel feels best on the first day and ages faster than a cotton one, and it is the wrong choice if you intend to hand it down to a second child.

Buy it for the size and the softness, knowing what it is. Do not buy it believing it is the natural-fiber option on the shelf -- the two Burt's Bees towels and the Comfy Cubs are the 100% cotton options here.

Washing a child's towel without wrecking it

Four rules, all of which matter more on a child's towel than on yours because the use is harder and the wash cycle comes round faster.

  • Wash before first use, always. New cotton carries natural waxes and manufacturing finishes that repel water, which is why a brand-new towel can seem to push water around rather than take it up. Two or three washes fix it -- the method is in how to wash new towels.
  • No fabric softener, ever. Softener works by depositing a thin water-repellent film on the fibers. On a towel that is the exact opposite of the job. It is also the most common reason a towel that used to work stopped working, which is the whole of why towels stop being absorbent.
  • Wash hot enough, and only every two or three uses. Towels used on clean skin do not need washing daily, but they do need a wash hot enough to deal with what grows in a damp towel. How often to wash towels sets the interval; the temperature matters more than the frequency.
  • Hang it flat and open. A hooded towel balled on a low hook at child height will not dry, and a towel that does not dry sours. A rail at adult height with the towel opened out beats a cute hook at child height every time, however much better the hook looks.

When to stop buying hooded towels

Somewhere between five and eight most children stop needing the hood and start wanting a normal towel, and buying another character towel at that point is money spent on a thing that will be refused within a year.

The useful replacement is a regular bath towel at a sensible weight rather than another kids' product. A 500 to 600 GSM cotton towel at standard size is lighter to carry when wet than a plush one, dries faster on a crowded rail, and will still be in service when the child leaves for college -- the GSM guide explains why that band is the sweet spot. A standard 27 x 54 in towel on an eight-year-old is a bath sheet, and that is fine.

If you want a transition piece, a flat-woven Turkish towel is the quiet answer: light, long, fast-drying, and not patterned with anything a child can grow out of liking. The Turkish towels for travel roundup covers the same cloth for the same reasons.

As a gift, buy the next size up

Hooded towels are the default baby-shower present, which means a first baby usually receives three or four of the same newborn size and none of the next one. If you are buying a gift, the genuinely useful move is to skip the newborn square entirely and give the 35 in square or the toddler rectangle -- the sizes nobody thinks to buy and every parent eventually needs.

If you want it personalized, note that embroidery on a child's towel runs into the same constraints as embroidery on anybody's: it is usually non-returnable and it narrows what you can wash it with. The towels worth monogramming covers the thread question, which matters more here than on an adult's towel because a child's towel gets washed harder.

The one-line verdict

Buy by the inch, in cotton, two at a time, and choose the construction that your bathroom can dry rather than the one that feels thickest in the photograph. Every other decision in this category is decoration -- which is fine, as long as it is the last decision rather than the first.

What we like

  • Fiber and construction are both published, which is rare in the baby aisle
  • Knit terry is softer against new skin than a stiff woven terry out of the bag
  • Two at a time is the right quantity -- one is always in the wash

What we do not

  • 29 x 29 in is outgrown fast; most children are too big for it well before age two
  • No published weight, so you are buying on fiber and construction rather than a number
  • Knit terry pills more readily than woven terry over a long life

How it holds up

Organic is a farming claim, not a longevity one, so what matters here is that it is 100% cotton with no viscose in the blend to break down wet. A knit structure stretches rather than tears, which is forgiving in a towel that gets pulled around, and it is also why it goes baggy at the hood before it wears through anywhere else.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you want one towel to last from birth to school age. At 29 x 29 in this is a first-year towel, bought deliberately.

What we like

  • Layered muslin has no pile, so it dries in a fraction of the time terry takes
  • 32 x 32 in gives roughly a year more use than a 29 in towel
  • Gets softer with washing in a way terry does not -- muslin opens up rather than matting down

What we do not

  • Holds much less water than terry at the same size, so it is a press-and-wrap towel
  • Gauze snags on jewelry and on rough nails more easily than a closed terry face
  • Looks thin out of the bag, which reads as cheap to people expecting a plush towel

How it holds up

Layered muslin is the construction that best resists the thing that actually kills children's towels: staying damp in a windowless bathroom until it sours. Fewer fibers in contact means faster drying, and faster drying means a towel that never develops the smell that gets it thrown out. Expect the layers to soften and bloom rather than flatten.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you dry a child by rubbing. Muslin wants to be wrapped and pressed, and anyone treating it like terry will call it useless.

What we like

  • 35 x 35 in is genuinely large for a hooded towel -- it keeps working through toddlerhood
  • Viscose from bamboo is slick and soft against skin from the first use, with no break-in
  • Sold two at a time, and the same hood pattern runs across a dozen designs

What we do not

  • Viscose is weaker wet than cotton, and a towel lives its working life wet
  • Bamboo-derived viscose is a chemically processed regenerated fiber, not a natural one -- the marketing blurs this
  • No published weight, and no cotton content to fall back on

How it holds up

This is the shortest-lived construction in this group and the nicest to use on day one. Viscose loses strength when wet and the fibers abrade faster, so expect it to go thin and lose its hand after a year or two of real use rather than five. Buy it for the size and the softness, with eyes open.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you expect to hand this towel down to a second child. Buy cotton for that job.

#ad How we are funded · Price as of November 3, 2026

What we like

  • Woven terry is the harder-wearing of the two terry constructions and the more absorbent
  • 50 in long is enough to wrap a toddler properly rather than drape one
  • 100% cotton with nothing blended in to fail first

What we do not

  • Full-size terry at this length takes real time to dry -- it needs a rail, not a hook
  • The animal character is the point, and a child who stops liking it stops using it
  • No published weight, so density is unknown until it arrives

How it holds up

Woven terry in 100% cotton is the construction that survives being washed at proper temperatures, which matters more for a child's towel than for anyone else's. The hood seam is the thing to watch: it carries the whole weight of a wet towel every time it is picked up by the hood, which is exactly how a child picks it up.

Who should skip it

Skip it in a small bathroom with no airflow. A 50 in terry towel that never fully dries is the shortest route to the smell.

#ad How we are funded · Price as of November 3, 2026

What we like

  • A poncho cut stays on by itself, which is the whole reason a child will actually keep it on
  • 30 x 50 in covers a school-age child properly, where square baby towels stop at toddler size
  • 100% cotton rather than a polyester novelty fabric, which most character towels are not

What we do not

  • Novelty print is the selling point and the expiry date -- taste changes around age six
  • No published weight; expect a mid-light terry rather than a dense one
  • Poncho cuts have more seams than a flat towel, and seams are where towels fail

How it holds up

Cotton and a simple cut are the right answers; the stitching around the neck opening is the weak point, because a wet poncho is heavy and children pull it off over their heads. It is also the one towel here that will go to the pool, and chlorine plus sunscreen is harder on cotton than anything that happens in a bathroom.

Who should skip it

Skip it for a baby -- the opening is cut for a child who can get in and out of it, and it is the wrong shape for drying a newborn on a lap.

Frequently asked questions

What size hooded towel do I need for a toddler?

Past about age two a square towel stops working and you want a rectangle. Burt's Bees Baby's hooded animal towel is 50 x 26 in in woven terry, and a hooded poncho like the Joiedomi is 30 x 50 in and stated for ages three to eight. The 29 x 29 in squares that dominate the baby aisle are newborn-to-first-birthday towels, whatever the listing says about toddlers.

Are bamboo hooded towels better than cotton for babies?

Softer, not better. Viscose derived from bamboo is slick and soft from the first use, and it loses a meaningful share of its strength when wet -- which is the state a towel works in. 100% cotton stands up to hot washing and hand-me-down use far better. Buy bamboo viscose for softness and size, cotton for longevity.

How many hooded towels does a baby need?

Two is the working minimum, because one is always in the wash and a towel that is rushed back into use before it has dried is the one that starts to smell. Three is comfortable. This is why most of the good ones are sold in pairs.

Why does my child's towel smell even after washing?

Because it is not drying between uses, not because it is dirty. A small towel balled on a low hook in a steamy bathroom stays damp for hours, and that is where the smell comes from. Hang it opened out on a rail, wash hot rather than warm, and skip fabric softener, which coats the fibers and makes the problem worse.

Is muslin or terry better for a baby towel?

Muslin dries far faster and holds less water; terry holds more water and more warmth and takes hours to dry. In a warm, sealed bathroom muslin is the better engineering choice because dry time is what keeps a child's towel usable. In a cold, well-ventilated bathroom terry is worth the drying time for the warmth it holds.

When should a child stop using a hooded towel?

Most children stop wanting one somewhere between five and eight. At that point buy a standard bath towel in the 500 to 600 GSM band rather than another kids' product -- it is lighter when wet, dries faster on a shared rail, and will still be in service a decade later.
