The Best Turkish Towels for Travel

A travel towel has to go back in a bag the morning after it was used. That is the specification, and it is the one thing a flat-woven peshtemal does better than anything else made of cotton.

The best Turkish towel for travel is the Bersuse Anatolia peshtemal: 100% cotton in a quick-dry flat weave at 37 x 70 in, with an XL version at 61 x 82 in if you want something that doubles as a beach blanket. The lightest option is the six-pack of Turkish cotton hammam peshtemals at 71 x 36 in and a published 11 oz per towel -- genuinely less than a third of the weight of a bath towel. Cacala's 37 x 70 in OEKO-TEX certified peshtemal is the classic hand-tasseled version, and GLAMBURG's two and six-piece sets are the cheapest way to pack a family.

The case for a Turkish towel in a suitcase is not romantic, it is mechanical. A flat weave has no loop pile, so there is far less cotton holding far less water, and nothing standing up to trap moisture against itself. It folds to a fraction of the bulk of a terry towel of the same footprint, and it dries overnight on the back of a hotel chair -- which is the only test that matters when you are packing at seven in the morning.

What makes a Turkish towel a travel towel

  1. Published weight per towel, in ounces or grams. This is the figure that decides what it does to your bag, and it is the figure peshtemal listings publish most often. 11 oz is light; a 600 GSM bath towel at the same footprint is several times that.
  2. Length over width. A long flat towel wraps, ties, doubles as a sarong, a blanket on a cold flight, a sun shade or a picnic layer. Width beyond about 37 in mostly adds bulk.
  3. Flat weave rather than terry-backed. A terry reverse is a real comfort upgrade at home and a packing penalty on the road -- it is the part that stays damp.
  4. Prewashed. A new peshtemal straight off the loom is stiff and shrinks in the first wash. Prewashed stock arrives soft and the stated size is the size you get.
  5. Finished ends you can live with. Hand-tied tassels look right and tangle in a bag; a hemstitched or plain hem packs better. Neither is wrong, but choose on purpose.

Best travel towel overall: Bersuse Anatolia

100% premium cotton in a flat quick-dry weave at 37 x 70 in, with an XL at 61 x 82 in. It is the peshtemal we would pack first because the standard size is the right travel size and the XL exists for the trips where the towel is also the beach blanket.

A flat weave at this size folds down to something closer to a large scarf than a towel, and it dries hanging over a balcony rail or a hotel chair back within a couple of hours in dry air. That is what makes a single towel enough for a week -- a terry bath towel used two days running in a sealed hotel bathroom never fully dries, and by day four you can smell it.

The cons are capacity and the break-in. A flat weave holds less water than terry, so long or thick hair will soak it and need a second pass. No weight is published either. And like every peshtemal it feels papery for the first three or four washes before it softens, which catches people out when it arrives.

Lightest to pack: Turkish Cotton Hammam Peshtemal, set of 6

100% Turkish cotton at 71 x 36 in, prewashed, made in Turkey, and a published 11 oz (330 g) per towel. The published weight is the reason this pick exists: it is one of the few peshtemals that tells you what it will do to your luggage allowance.

Prewashed matters almost as much. It arrives soft rather than stiff, and the stated size is the size you get rather than the size before the first wash takes an inch off each dimension.

The cons are the quantity and the thinness. Six is a lot of towels to buy to get one travel towel, so this makes sense if you are outfitting a household, a holiday rental or a group trip. The light weight that makes it pack well also makes it the least absorbent towel here.

Best classic peshtemal: Cacala

100% OEKO-TEX certified cotton at 37 x 70 in with hand-made tassels. This is the traditional hammam towel done properly, and the certification is worth something on a towel that spends a week against your skin in a hot climate.

At 70 in long it ties as a wrap, works as a sarong, and folds flat enough to line the bottom of a carry-on. The full peshtemal guide covers the weave and the history.

The cons are the tassels and the break-in. Hand-tied tassels are the part that knots around zips and other clothing in a bag, and they are the part that frays first in a hotel washing machine. Expect three or four washes before it is at its softest.

Best for packing a family: GLAMBURG Peshtemal

100% cotton at 36 x 71 in, sold in two-piece and six-piece sets. If the problem is four people, four towels and one car boot, this is the cheapest way to solve it without packing four terry bath towels.

Matching sets also solve the thing that goes wrong with shared towels on a trip -- nobody can tell whose is whose, so everybody uses the driest one. Buy different colors within the set if the listing offers them.

The cons are the paperwork. No weight, no certification and no origin detail. It is a flat-woven cotton towel at a volume price; buy it for the format rather than the fiber story.

Four Turkish towels for a bag, in order of how well they survive a week away from a tumble dryer.

Looking after a peshtemal on the road

  • Hang it spread, never folded. The entire advantage of a flat weave is that both faces get air. Folded over a rail it dries no faster than terry.
  • Wring it out properly before you hang it. A flat weave releases water easily -- twisting the length like a rope and squeezing takes out most of it in ten seconds.
  • Shake it out before packing. Sand and grit sit on the surface rather than burying in pile, which is one of the quiet advantages of a flat weave at a beach.
  • Wash it cool and skip the dryer when you get home. High heat shrinks a flat weave and tightens the tassels into knots. Line drying is what keeps a peshtemal the size it started.
  • Never use fabric softener. It coats the fiber and takes away the absorbency that a light towel cannot afford to lose. How to wash Turkish towels has the full routine.

When a peshtemal is the wrong travel towel

Three cases. Cold-weather trips, where you want something that feels warm coming out of a shower in an unheated room -- a flat weave feels thin and cool by design. Camping and backpacking with a strict weight budget, where microfiber wins on grams and packed volume and the plastic trade-off is worth it. And trips with very young children, where absorbency and warmth beat packability outright.

For everything else -- hotels, rentals, beaches, a car trip, a week in a hot country -- the flat weave is simply the better tool. Whether Turkish towels are worth it makes the broader case, and Turkish beach towels is the page if the trip is mostly sand.

Best travel towel overall

Bersuse Anatolia Peshtemal Turkish Towel

Bersuse

Bersuse Anatolia Peshtemal Turkish Towel

100% premium cotton in the Anatolia flat weave, at 37 x 70 in and with an XL 61 x 82 in version that doubles as a throw.

Published specifications for Bersuse Anatolia Peshtemal Turkish Towel
Fiber100% premium cotton
Size37 x 70 in (94 x 178 cm)
XL version61 x 82 in (155 x 210 cm)
WeaveFlat weave, quick-dry

What we like

  • The XL size genuinely works as a throw, wrap or picnic blanket as well as a towel
  • Lightweight enough to pack without thinking about it

What we do not

  • Sand-free and quick-dry claims are about the weave, not a treatment -- do not expect a coating
  • The larger sizes are unwieldy on a standard towel rail

How it holds up

Flat-woven cotton is structurally simple, which is its strength: there is very little to go wrong. Wash it with the rest of your towels and it will still be here when the terry is not.

Who should skip it

Skip the XL unless you actually want a dual-purpose piece. As a pure bath towel it is more cloth than anyone needs.

Turkish Cotton Hammam Peshtemal, Set of 6

Thin, light, prewashed peshtemals at 11 oz (330 g) each -- about a third of the storage space a terry towel takes.

Fiber100% Turkish cotton
Size71 x 36 in (180 x 90 cm)
Weight each11 oz (330 g)
FinishPrewashed, made in Turkey

What we like

  • Prewashed, so it skips the stiff, non-absorbent first few weeks
  • Takes roughly a third of the cupboard space of terry

What we do not

  • At 330 g these are genuinely thin and will feel insubstantial to some
  • Light peshtemals show wear at the hem earlier than heavier ones

How it holds up

Thin flat weave has the least material to lose, which cuts both ways: nothing crushes, but a snag goes straight through. Good for years of gentle use.

Who should skip it

Skip it as a family bath towel. This is a travel, gym, guest and second-bathroom towel.

Cacala Peshtemal Turkish Hammam Towel

Size37 x 70 in (94 x 178 cm)
WeaveFlat weave (peshtemal)
FinishHand-made tassels

What we like

  • Folds to a fraction of a terry towel's bulk -- genuinely useful in a small linen cupboard
  • Dries very fast because there is no pile to hold water
  • Gets softer with every wash rather than flatter

What we do not

  • Day one it feels stiff and does not absorb well -- this is normal and resolves
  • Tassels tangle in the machine unless you wash it with like items

How it holds up

A flat weave has no pile to crush, which is why peshtemals routinely outlive terry towels bought at the same time. The failure point is the tassels, not the cloth.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you want to be enveloped in something plush, or if a stiff first month would make you give up on it.

GLAMBURG Peshtemal Turkish Towel

GLAMBURG

GLAMBURG Peshtemal Turkish Towel

Published specifications for GLAMBURG Peshtemal Turkish Towel
Fiber100% cotton
Size36 x 71 in (91 x 180 cm)
Sets2-piece and 6-piece

What we like

  • Set pricing makes switching a whole bathroom over affordable
  • Standard peshtemal dimensions -- nothing eccentric to get used to

What we do not

  • Set quality is more variable piece to piece than single-towel purchases
  • Marketed for the beach, which undersells it as a bath towel

How it holds up

Ordinary flat-woven cotton doing the thing flat-woven cotton does well. Nothing here is engineered for longevity beyond the weave itself, and the weave is enough.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you want one considered towel rather than six adequate ones.

Frequently asked questions

Are Turkish towels good for travel?

They are among the best cotton options. A flat-woven peshtemal has no loop pile, so it packs to a fraction of the bulk of a terry towel, holds less water and dries overnight on a chair back or balcony rail. That is the quality that makes one towel enough for a week away.

What is the best Turkish towel for travel?

The Bersuse Anatolia peshtemal at 37 x 70 in, in a quick-dry flat weave, with an XL at 61 x 82 in for trips where the towel doubles as a beach blanket. For the lightest option, the six-pack of Turkish cotton hammam peshtemals publishes 11 oz per towel.

How fast does a Turkish towel dry?

Hung spread out in dry air, a couple of hours; overnight in almost any conditions. The critical detail is hanging it spread rather than folded -- a flat weave only has its advantage when both faces get air.

Is a Turkish towel better than a microfiber travel towel?

Microfiber dries faster and packs smaller. A Turkish towel feels better against skin, does not hold odor after several days in a bag, and is cotton rather than plastic. For hotels and rentals the peshtemal is the better choice; for a backpack where grams are argued over, microfiber wins.

How big should a travel Turkish towel be?

Around 36-37 in wide and 70-72 in long is the standard and the most useful: long enough to wrap, tie or use as a sarong, narrow enough not to add bulk. Oversized versions above 60 in wide are beach blankets, and they pack like it.

Do Turkish towels shrink?

The first wash takes some length out of any flat weave that was not prewashed, which is why prewashed stock is worth looking for. After that, keeping them out of a hot dryer is what holds the size -- heat is what shrinks a peshtemal and knots the tassels.
