The best Turkish beach towel is the Cacala peshtemal: 37 x 70 in of flat-woven OEKO-TEX cotton with hand-tied tassels, no pile for sand to lodge in, and dry again in open air within minutes. Expect it to be stiff and water-repellent for the first three or four washes -- that is normal in a new peshtemal, and it softens for years afterward.
A beach towel is judged on three things and absorbency is not top of the list. It has to shake clean, it has to fit in a bag that also holds everything else, and it has to be usable again tomorrow morning. A dense terry towel fails all three and a flat-woven Turkish towel passes all three, for one structural reason.
Terry is thousands of upright loops. Dry sand settles into the base of every one of them and does not come out until the towel is washed. A flat weave has no loops at all, so sand sits on the surface and brushes off. That is the whole argument, and everything else on this page follows from it.
How we chose
- Flat weave first. No pile means no sand reservoir and no water reservoir. The weave difference in full.
- Real size, not described size. "Oversized" is not a measurement. Every towel here is listed with the dimensions its own listing publishes.
- Packed thickness. A peshtemal that folds to two inches is a different object from one that folds to five, and it is the difference between taking one towel and taking four.
- Edge finish. The tasseled fringe is the part of a peshtemal that fails, and hand-tied tassels last considerably longer than machine-serged ones.
- Whether it can also be a bath towel. The best beach towel on this page is also a perfectly good bathroom towel, which is a large part of why it is worth owning.
The six, in a table
| Towel | Size | Weave | Finish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cacala peshtemal | 37 x 70 in | Flat weave | Hand-made tassels |
| Bersuse Anatolia | 37 x 70 in | Flat weave, quick-dry | Fringed |
| HamamTamam | 37 x 74 in | Flat weave | Fringed, made in Turkey |
| GLAMBURG | 36 x 71 in | Flat weave | Sold as a set |
| Hammam 6-pack | 71 x 36 in | Flat weave | Prewashed, made in Turkey |
| Bersuse Lagos | 35 x 67 in | Flat face, terry reverse | Fringed |
None of these listings publishes a GSM, which is normal for flat-woven towels and is why the table ranks size and structure instead. We have not invented a weight for any of them.
Best overall: Cacala peshtemal
37 x 70 in of 100% OEKO-TEX certified cotton in the classic flat hammam weave, with hand-tied tassels. It is the reference peshtemal: wide enough to lie on, long enough to wrap, and it folds down to almost nothing.
On a beach it brushes clean and dries in the time it takes to swim. At home, once broken in, it is a genuinely good bath towel -- which is the quiet reason to buy a peshtemal rather than a dedicated beach towel you use eight days a year.
Largest useful beach towel: Bersuse Anatolia
37 x 70 in of 100% premium cotton in a flat weave the brand specifically builds for quick drying. The difference from the Cacala is small and real: slightly more structured hand, and a weave that sheds water a touch faster at the cost of a little absorbency.
This is the one to buy if the towel's main job is covering a sun lounger rather than drying a person.
Longest, and made in Turkey: HamamTamam
37 x 74 in of 100% cotton, fringed, made in Turkey. Four extra inches of length sounds trivial and is not: it is the difference between a towel that covers a tall adult on a lounger and one that leaves their feet on the plastic.
Made-in-Turkey matters here beyond provenance. The traditional weaving mills produce a denser flat weave than most of the volume producers, and it shows after fifty washes.
Best for a family: GLAMBURG peshtemal
36 x 71 in of flat-woven cotton, sold as a set. The practical problem with beach towels is never one towel, it is four, and four terry towels do not fit in a bag with anything else.
Four peshtemals occupy roughly the space of one folded bath towel. That is the entire reason this is on the page.
Lightest per towel: Turkish Cotton hammam 6-pack
71 x 36 in of 100% Turkish cotton, prewashed, made in Turkey, six to a pack. Prewashed is the useful detail -- it shortens the break-in period substantially, so these are usable on day one rather than in week three.
They are the thinnest towels on the page. For a pool house, a boat or a holiday let that needs a stack of towels nobody will mourn, that is the right trade.
Best if you want some pile: Bersuse Lagos
35 x 67 in of 100% cotton, flat-woven on the face and terry on the reverse. If the flat weave's lack of softness is the thing stopping you, this is the honest compromise: lie on the flat side, dry yourself on the terry side.
It packs thicker than a true peshtemal and dries slower, in exchange for feeling like a towel immediately. Where it sits against the rest of the range.
What we would not buy as a beach towel
- A printed velour beach towel. Shearing cuts the loops that absorb, so velour is a sunbathing surface rather than a towel. It also holds sand in the cut pile.
- A heavy terry bath sheet. It works, it comes home full of sand, and it will be damp for the rest of the trip. Bath towel versus beach towel, properly.
- A microfiber travel towel, for a whole holiday. Fast-drying, and unpleasant on skin once it has picked up any residue.
- A peshtemal with machine-serged edges instead of tassels. The fringe is the failure point on this type of towel, and a serged edge frays sooner.
- Anything sold as "sand free" with a synthetic face. The claim is usually true and the towel is usually a plastic sheet you do not want to lie on.
Looking after a Turkish beach towel
- Shake it out before it goes in the bag. The whole advantage of a flat weave is that this works. Thirty seconds saves a wash.
- Rinse salt water out the same day if you can. Dried salt is abrasive and it is what wears the weave at the folds.
- Wash warm, never hot, with no fabric softener. Softener coats the flat weave and undoes the absorbency the break-in period earned.
- Line dry if possible. Tumble drying is what shrinks a peshtemal and what tangles and breaks the tassels.
- Comb the fringe out with your fingers while damp. Tassels that dry tangled stay tangled and then snap.
That is most of the care story. The full version, including what to do about stiffness that has not gone after four washes, is in how to wash Turkish towels.
A beach towel and a travel towel are close relatives with one real difference: a travel towel has to go back in a bag the next morning. The travel picks are chosen on dry time and published weight rather than on sand.

Best Turkish beach towel overall
Cacala Peshtemal Turkish Hammam Towel
Cacala

A traditional flat-woven peshtemal in 100% cotton with hand-tied tassels -- the original Turkish bath towel, not a terry towel with fringe added.
| Fiber | 100% cotton (OEKO-TEX certified) |
|---|---|
| Size | 37 x 70 in (94 x 178 cm) |
| Weave | Flat weave (peshtemal) |
| Finish | Hand-made tassels |
What we like
- Folds to a fraction of a terry towel's bulk -- genuinely useful in a small linen cupboard
- Dries very fast because there is no pile to hold water
- Gets softer with every wash rather than flatter
What we do not
- Day one it feels stiff and does not absorb well -- this is normal and resolves
- Tassels tangle in the machine unless you wash it with like items
How it holds up
A flat weave has no pile to crush, which is why peshtemals routinely outlive terry towels bought at the same time. The failure point is the tassels, not the cloth.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you want to be enveloped in something plush, or if a stiff first month would make you give up on it.

Largest useful beach towel
Bersuse Anatolia Peshtemal Turkish Towel
Bersuse

100% premium cotton in the Anatolia flat weave, at 37 x 70 in and with an XL 61 x 82 in version that doubles as a throw.
| Fiber | 100% premium cotton |
|---|---|
| Size | 37 x 70 in (94 x 178 cm) |
| XL version | 61 x 82 in (155 x 210 cm) |
| Weave | Flat weave, quick-dry |
What we like
- The XL size genuinely works as a throw, wrap or picnic blanket as well as a towel
- Lightweight enough to pack without thinking about it
What we do not
- Sand-free and quick-dry claims are about the weave, not a treatment -- do not expect a coating
- The larger sizes are unwieldy on a standard towel rail
How it holds up
Flat-woven cotton is structurally simple, which is its strength: there is very little to go wrong. Wash it with the rest of your towels and it will still be here when the terry is not.
Who should skip it
Skip the XL unless you actually want a dual-purpose piece. As a pure bath towel it is more cloth than anyone needs.

Longest, and made in Turkey
HamamTamam Oversized Fringed Peshtemal
HamamTamam

37 x 74 in of 100% pure cotton, woven in Turkey and finished with the traditional fringe -- longer than most peshtemals on the market.
| Fiber | 100% pure cotton |
|---|---|
| Size | 37 x 74 in (94 x 188 cm) |
| Origin | Made in Turkey |
| Finish | Fringed |
#ad How we are funded · Price as of November 3, 2026
What we like
- Actually made in Turkey, which a surprising number of 'Turkish towels' are not
- The extra length matters if you wrap rather than pat dry
What we do not
- Long fringe is the first thing to tangle and fray
- Oversized means slower to dry than a standard peshtemal despite the flat weave
How it holds up
Turkish-woven flat cotton is about as long-lived as bath textiles get. Trim stray fringe threads rather than pulling them, and the towel itself will outlast several terry sets.
Who should skip it
Skip it if fringe annoys you. There is a lot of it here and it is the maintenance item.

Best for buying a family's worth
GLAMBURG Peshtemal Turkish Towel
GLAMBURG

36 x 71 in cotton peshtemals sold in twos and sixes, which is how you actually convert a household off terry.
| Fiber | 100% cotton |
|---|---|
| Size | 36 x 71 in (91 x 180 cm) |
| Sets | 2-piece and 6-piece |
What we like
- Set pricing makes switching a whole bathroom over affordable
- Standard peshtemal dimensions -- nothing eccentric to get used to
What we do not
- Set quality is more variable piece to piece than single-towel purchases
- Marketed for the beach, which undersells it as a bath towel
How it holds up
Ordinary flat-woven cotton doing the thing flat-woven cotton does well. Nothing here is engineered for longevity beyond the weave itself, and the weave is enough.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you want one considered towel rather than six adequate ones.

Lightest per towel, by the set
Turkish Cotton Hammam Peshtemal, Set of 6
Turkish Cotton

Thin, light, prewashed peshtemals at 11 oz (330 g) each -- about a third of the storage space a terry towel takes.
| Fiber | 100% Turkish cotton |
|---|---|
| Size | 71 x 36 in (180 x 90 cm) |
| Weight each | 11 oz (330 g) |
| Finish | Prewashed, made in Turkey |
What we like
- Prewashed, so it skips the stiff, non-absorbent first few weeks
- Takes roughly a third of the cupboard space of terry
What we do not
- At 330 g these are genuinely thin and will feel insubstantial to some
- Light peshtemals show wear at the hem earlier than heavier ones
How it holds up
Thin flat weave has the least material to lose, which cuts both ways: nothing crushes, but a snag goes straight through. Good for years of gentle use.
Who should skip it
Skip it as a family bath towel. This is a travel, gym, guest and second-bathroom towel.

Best if you want some pile
Bersuse Lagos Terry-Backed Peshtemal
Bersuse

A peshtemal with a terry backing -- flat weave on one side for pack-down and fast drying, looped terry on the other for absorbency.
| Fiber | 100% cotton |
|---|---|
| Size | 35 x 67 in (89 x 170 cm) |
| Construction | Flat-woven face, terry reverse |
#ad How we are funded · Price as of November 3, 2026
What we like
- Solves the single most common complaint about peshtemals -- that they do not feel absorbent
- Still packs smaller than a full terry towel
What we do not
- Heavier and slower to dry than a pure flat weave
- You lose some of the pack-down advantage that makes peshtemals worth owning
How it holds up
A terry back reintroduces the pile that crushes over time, so this will not age quite as gracefully as a pure peshtemal. It is still a flat-weave structure carrying the load.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you want the true peshtemal experience -- half of this towel is a conventional terry towel.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best Turkish beach towels?
The Cacala peshtemal at 37 x 70 in is the one we would buy: flat-woven OEKO-TEX cotton with hand-tied tassels, no pile for sand to lodge in, and dry in minutes. The HamamTamam at 37 x 74 in is the pick if you want the longest towel.
Are Turkish towels good beach towels?
They are the best beach towels there are, for one structural reason: a flat weave has no terry loops, so sand brushes off instead of lodging in the pile, and the same lack of pile is why they dry in minutes and fold to a couple of inches.
Do Turkish beach towels dry you properly?
Once they are broken in, yes. A new peshtemal is stiff and water-repellent from its sizing finish, and three or four warm washes with no fabric softener fix that. After that it absorbs well and keeps softening for years.
What size should a Turkish beach towel be?
At least 36 x 70 in to lie on comfortably, and 37 x 74 in if you are tall. Flat-woven towels are sold larger than terry towels because the extra cloth costs almost nothing in packed volume.
How do you get sand out of a Turkish towel?
Shake it. That is the point of the flat weave -- there are no loops for the sand to sit in, so a brisk shake while the towel is dry removes nearly all of it. Rinse salt water out the same day if you can.
Can you use a Turkish beach towel as a bath towel?
Yes, and that is what peshtemals were originally for. Once broken in they make an excellent bath towel, particularly in a small or badly ventilated bathroom where a terry towel never finishes drying.
Should you tumble dry a Turkish beach towel?
Avoid it. Tumble drying shrinks the flat weave and tangles and breaks the tassels, which are the part of a peshtemal that fails first. Line dry, and comb the fringe out with your fingers while it is still damp.
