Bath Towel vs Beach Towel: Size Is the Least of It

They are close enough in size that people swap them, and different enough in weave that one of them comes home full of sand.

A bath towel is typically 27 x 54 in of absorbent terry built to dry a person in a warm room; a beach towel is typically 30 x 60 in or larger, often with a looser or flatter weave, and its real job is to lie on sand, shake clean and dry in the open air. You can use a bath towel at the beach -- it will work, come home heavy with sand trapped in the pile, and take a day to dry.

Most people arrive at this question because they are standing in front of a cupboard deciding whether to pack a bath towel for a holiday. The short answer is that it depends almost entirely on the weave, and not much on the size.

The sizes, side by side

Typical sizes. Manufacturers vary, so treat these as the center of each range.
FormatTypical sizeMetric
Hand towel16 x 28 in41 x 71 cm
Bath towel27 x 54 in69 x 137 cm
Beach towel30 x 60 in76 x 152 cm
Bath sheet35 x 70 in89 x 178 cm
Turkish peshtemal37 x 70 in94 x 178 cm
Oversized beach towel40 x 70 in and up102 x 178 cm and up

Notice that a bath sheet is larger than a typical beach towel, and a peshtemal is larger again. Size is not what separates these categories, which is why swapping them seems like it should work. The full size chart for every towel format.

What actually differs

The four differences that matter in practice.
Bath towelBeach towel
Primary jobAbsorb water off skin indoorsLie on sand, dry in open air
Typical weaveDense terry pile, 500-700 GSMLooser terry, velour face, or flat weave
Sand behaviorPile traps sand; needs washingFlat or short pile; shakes clean
Dry time outdoorsHours, and it stays heavyFast, especially flat weaves
PackingBulky, roughly a third of a carry-onFlat weaves fold to a few inches

The sand row is the one people underestimate. A 600 GSM terry pile is thousands of small loops, and dry sand settles into the base of every one of them. You cannot shake it out, you can only wash it out, which means a sandy bath towel is a laundry job rather than a shake-and-fold.

Can you use a bath towel as a beach towel?

Yes, with three consequences. It will absorb better than most beach towels, which is genuinely nice after a swim. It will come home with sand in the pile and have to be washed. And it will be the heaviest, slowest-drying thing in your bag for the rest of the trip.

For a single afternoon that is a reasonable trade. For a week by the sea with one towel, it is not -- a towel that never dries overnight in a humid room is how holiday towels start to smell. Why that happens and how fast.

Can you use a beach towel as a bath towel?

Less successfully, and it depends which kind you have. A flat-woven Turkish peshtemal makes an excellent bath towel once it is broken in -- that is what it was originally for. A printed velour beach towel makes a poor one, because the sheared face does not absorb and the backing is usually thin.

So the useful rule is not bath versus beach. It is loop terry versus flat weave versus velour, and only the last one is genuinely single-purpose.

The four we would take

Cacala peshtemal is the beach towel we would buy: 37 x 70 in of flat-woven OEKO-TEX cotton with hand-tied tassels, no pile at all, so sand brushes off and it dries while you are still swimming. It folds to a few inches. It is stiff for the first three or four washes and then softens for years. How to break one in.

Bersuse Anatolia is the same idea at the largest useful size: 37 x 70 in of 100% premium cotton in a quick-dry flat weave. If you want one towel that covers a sun lounger and still packs flat, this is it.

GLAMBURG peshtemal solves the family problem: 36 x 71 in flat-woven cotton sold as a set, so a household can take four and still close the bag.

American Soft Linen 35 x 70 in bath sheet is the bath towel we would pack if a bath towel is what you are packing: 600 GSM Turkish cotton with double-stitched long sides. It is big enough to use as a beach towel, and it is honest about being a terry towel doing a flat-weave job.

Three flat-woven Turkish towels in the sizes people actually want, and the one terry bath sheet we would take to the coast.

The classic flat-weave peshtemal

Cacala Peshtemal Turkish Hammam Towel

A traditional flat-woven peshtemal in 100% cotton with hand-tied tassels -- the original Turkish bath towel, not a terry towel with fringe added.

Largest useful peshtemal

Bersuse Anatolia Peshtemal Turkish Towel

100% premium cotton in the Anatolia flat weave, at 37 x 70 in and with an XL 61 x 82 in version that doubles as a throw.

GLAMBURG Peshtemal Turkish Towel

Buying peshtemals by the set

GLAMBURG Peshtemal Turkish Towel

American Soft Linen 35x70 XL Bath Sheet

The default oversized towel

American Soft Linen 35x70 XL Bath Sheet

600 GSM Turkish cotton at 35 x 70 in with double-stitched long sides -- the same practical weight band as the brand's standard towel, in the size people actually mean when they say they want a bigger towel.

If you only own one, buy the flat weave

The asymmetry is the whole point of this page. A flat-woven Turkish towel does both jobs well: it dries you indoors once broken in, and it is a better beach towel than any terry towel. A terry bath towel does one job well and the other badly.

For travel, a gym bag, a boat, a camper or a small bathroom, the flat weave is simply the more useful object. Are Turkish towels worth it covers the trade-offs honestly, including the ones that put people off.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a bath towel and a beach towel?

Size is the smaller part of it. A bath towel is dense loop terry built to absorb water indoors; a beach towel is usually larger with a looser, flatter or sheared face so it sheds sand and dries in open air. The weave is what separates them.

Is a beach towel bigger than a bath towel?

Usually, but not always. A typical beach towel is 30 x 60 in against a bath towel's 27 x 54 in -- while a bath sheet at 35 x 70 in is larger than both, and a Turkish peshtemal is larger again.

Can I use a bath towel as a beach towel?

Yes. It will absorb better than most beach towels, it will trap sand in the pile so it has to be washed rather than shaken, and it will be the slowest-drying thing in your bag. Fine for an afternoon, poor for a week.

Can I use a beach towel as a bath towel?

A flat-woven Turkish beach towel makes an excellent bath towel once it is broken in. A printed velour beach towel makes a poor one, because shearing cuts the loops that do the absorbing.

What is the best towel for the beach?

A flat-woven Turkish peshtemal. It has no pile for sand to lodge in, it dries in minutes in open air, it folds to a few inches, and once washed a few times it is soft enough to use as a bath towel too.

Why do beach towels not absorb well?

Because many of them have a sheared velour face, and shearing cuts the terry loops that do the absorbing. Velour is a sunbathing surface that photographs well rather than an absorbent cloth.
