A classic flat-woven peshtemal in 100% Turkish cotton is the best buy in this category: it packs to a third of a terry towel's bulk, dries in an hour or two, and softens for years. Expect two or three washes before it absorbs properly.
Before anything else: "Turkish towel" covers two different products. A peshtemal is a flat-woven cloth with no pile. A Turkish cotton towel is ordinary looped terry woven from Turkish cotton. This list covers both, because people searching the phrase mean both, but the two behave nothing alike and buying the wrong one is where the disappointment comes from.

How to make them last
Peshtemals are among the longest-lived textiles in a linen cupboard, because there is very little structure to fail. Three rules keep them that way:
- Wash warm with a normal dose of detergent and no fabric softener -- softener coats a flat weave even more obviously than it coats terry.
- Wash with like items. Tassels tangle around zips and hooks and that is how fringe is lost.
- Line dry where you can. Tumble drying is fine on low, but a peshtemal on a rail is dry in an hour anyway.
If a peshtemal has gone stiff after years of use, it is mineral or detergent build-up rather than wear -- stripping brings it back.
