How to make them last
The towel you buy matters less than what you do to it afterwards. Three habits do most of the work, and the first one is the whole ballgame:
- No fabric softener, ever. It deposits a water-repellent film on the fiber, which is precisely the opposite of what a towel is for. This is the single most common reason towels stop absorbing -- see towels not absorbent.
- Half the detergent you think. Residue coats the pile the same way softener does. Most people badly over-dose.
