Teema sells flat-woven Turkish towels in 100% organic Turkish cotton at a published 190 to 220 GSM, mostly in a bath sheet size of around 38 x 68-70 in, woven in southwestern Turkey and certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. That weight is the review: a Teema towel is roughly a third the weight of a plush terry bath towel, which makes it fast-drying, packable and genuinely pleasant in a warm bathroom, and makes it the wrong towel for anyone who wants to be enveloped. The brand publishes its GSM, fiber, size and origin, which is more than most of its competitors do. It is also permanently discounted, which makes the list price hard to read.
We have not run these through a year of laundry and will not pretend otherwise. What follows is what Teema publishes, read the same way we read every towel on this site -- weight, fiber, weave, size, what the silences mean -- plus what the brand's pricing and stock behavior tell you about buying from it.
What Teema actually sells
One product category, in a lot of patterns. The towels are flat-woven peshtemals rather than terry: there is no pile, which is why the weights are a fraction of what a conventional bath towel weighs. The brand groups them by weave name -- Labyrinth, Diamante, Waffle Labyrinth, Simple, Layers, Tribal, Tiki -- across roughly four dozen colorways.
| Line | Published weight | Fiber | Size | Certification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diamante (flagship weave) | 220 GSM | 100% organic Turkish cotton | 70 x 38 in | OEKO-TEX Standard 100, SMETA Sedex |
| Layers | 190 GSM | 100% organic Turkish cotton | 68 x 38 in | OEKO-TEX Standard 100, SMETA Sedex |
| Checkmate (sold through Free People) | Not published as GSM (listed at 12 oz) | Turkish cotton | 68 x 38 in | Not stated on that listing |
| Labyrinth / Waffle Labyrinth / Tribal / Tiki | Not published per line | 100% organic Turkish cotton | Varies by collection | OEKO-TEX Standard 100 |
Two details on that table are worth stopping on. The first is that Teema publishes a GSM at all -- in the peshtemal category that is unusual, and most of the Turkish towels sold on marketplaces publish nothing but a size. The second is that the brand's own FAQ says size and weight vary by collection and points you at a chart inside each product's images, which is a polite way of saying the number is not consistent across the range.
What 190 to 220 GSM means in a bathroom
A standard retail terry bath towel sits between 500 and 700 GSM. A hotel-spec towel is around 550 to 600. Teema's towels are 190 to 220. That is not a criticism -- a flat weave at 600 GSM would be a rug -- but it is the number that decides whether you will be happy.
What it buys you: dry time measured in a couple of hours rather than most of a day, a towel that folds down to roughly the bulk of a sweatshirt, a piece that works as a wrap, a throw and a beach towel, and -- the underrated one -- a towel a small bathroom can actually dry. Damp is what ends towels; a towel that is dry again by the next shower does not start to smell. That argument is the whole of why towels smell and how to fix it.
What it costs you: surface contact. A flat weave has no pile to hold water, so drying off is a wrap-and-press action rather than a rub, and it takes longer the first few times until the habit changes. Anyone used to sinking into a 700 GSM towel will read a peshtemal as thin for about a week. Some never stop reading it that way, which is the honest reason this is a brand with devotees rather than a brand everyone likes.
The weaves, and which one to choose
Teema's own FAQ draws the line that matters, and it is more useful than the pattern names suggest. Labyrinth and Diamante are the looser weaves: softer, more blanket-like, better as a wrap or a throw. Simple and Layers are the tighter weaves: lighter, more portable, the ones to take somewhere.
Translate that into durability terms and the trade is the usual one. A looser weave is softer immediately and has longer floats of yarn across the surface, which is what a ring or a zipper catches on. A tighter weave is less immediately plush and has less to snag. If a towel is going into a bag, a car or a gym locker, the tighter weave is the better buy, and that is also the logic behind the Turkish towels for travel roundup.
The Diamante is described as woven on traditional dobby looms, which is a real manufacturing detail rather than a marketing phrase -- the dobby mechanism is what lets a loom weave a pattern into the structure of the cloth instead of printing it on. It is the same machinery behind the border band on a conventional towel, which why towels have a stripe explains at length.
The certifications, read honestly
Teema lists OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and SMETA Sedex. They are not the same kind of claim and it is worth knowing which is which before you pay for either.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a chemical-safety test on the finished textile: it certifies that the fabric has been tested for harmful substances. It says nothing about durability, weight or cotton grade -- a flimsy towel can be certified.
- SMETA Sedex is an ethical-trade audit of the factory, covering labor and working conditions. It is a claim about how the towel was made rather than about the cloth. It is a genuinely good thing to see on a textile brand, and it is also not a quality standard.
- Organic cotton is a claim about how the fiber was farmed. It is unrelated to staple length, which is the cotton property that predicts lint and longevity -- the distinction in the cotton types guide.
Nothing here is a criticism of Teema. All three are more than most peshtemal sellers offer. The point is that none of the three tells you how long the towel will last, and the brand does not publish a staple class, so on longevity you are buying on the weave and the weight.
Pricing, stock and the way the brand sells
Teema sells direct through its own store, with free US shipping over a threshold, and also appears at Free People and Walmart and wholesale through Faire. We do not publish prices on this site except through the live price layer, and in Teema's case the reason is on display: the catalog runs on near-permanent sitewide discounting with a countdown timer attached, so a list price quoted today is not a number you could act on.
What that behavior does tell you is practical. Never buy a towel from a store in this pattern at full price, because full price is not the operating price. And because individual colorways go out of stock -- the flagship Tan Diamante was showing sold out when we checked -- buying a matched set of four means buying them in one order rather than one at a time.
Returns are stated clearly: 30 days from delivery for both returns and exchanges, requested by email with an order number. That is a normal window and a slightly manual process.
What to compare it against
Teema has no Amazon storefront, so the useful comparison is not Teema versus a retailer -- it is a published 190-220 GSM organic flat weave versus the flat-weave towels you can get in one click. Four, at different ends of the brief.
Four flat-weave Turkish towels to weigh against a Teema, each with its own published specification. Live prices and the date checked sit on each card.

The classic flat-weave peshtemal
Cacala Peshtemal Turkish Hammam Towel
A traditional flat-woven peshtemal in 100% cotton with hand-tied tassels -- the original Turkish bath towel, not a terry towel with fringe added.

Oversized, made in Turkey
HamamTamam Oversized Fringed Peshtemal
37 x 74 in of 100% pure cotton, woven in Turkey and finished with the traditional fringe -- longer than most peshtemals on the market.

The compromise: flat face, terry back
Bersuse Lagos Terry-Backed Peshtemal

Buying peshtemals by the set
GLAMBURG Peshtemal Turkish Towel
36 x 71 in cotton peshtemals sold in twos and sixes, which is how you actually convert a household off terry.
- Closest equivalent: Cacala's 37 x 70 in peshtemal, OEKO-TEX certified, with hand-tied tassels. Same category, same size class, no published GSM -- which is the trade you make for the one-click purchase.
- If you want longer: HamamTamam's 37 x 74 in fringed peshtemal, made in Turkey. Four extra inches sounds trivial and is not, if you intend to wrap in it.
- If the thinness is the problem: Bersuse's Lagos has a flat face and a terry reverse. It is the compromise that converts most people who bounce off a pure flat weave.
- If you are buying several: GLAMBURG's peshtemals come in 2- and 6-piece sets at 36 x 71 in, which is how to furnish a guest bathroom or a beach house without ordering four colorways separately.
Who should buy a Teema, and who should not
Buy one if your bathroom is small or poorly ventilated, if you want a towel that doubles as a wrap or a travel piece, if you care that the factory has been audited, or if you already know you like a peshtemal and want one from a brand that publishes its numbers. On those terms it is a well-documented product in a category full of undocumented ones.
Skip it if you want a towel to sink into, if you dry off by rubbing rather than pressing, if you are furnishing a family bathroom where towels get yanked off hooks, or if you need one towel to be the only towel in the house. A 190-220 GSM flat weave is a specialist, and buying it as a general-purpose bath towel is the single most common way to be disappointed by one. Are Turkish towels worth it is the longer version of that argument, and the Turkish bath towel roundup is where to go if the answer is yes.
The one-line verdict
Teema is an honest, well-documented flat-weave towel brand whose single most important specification -- 190 to 220 GSM -- is also the thing most buyers will get wrong about it. Read that number first, decide whether you want a peshtemal at all, and only then pick a color.
Frequently asked questions
What GSM are Teema towels?
Teema publishes 220 GSM for the Diamante, its flagship weave, and 190 GSM for the Layers line. For comparison, a standard terry bath towel is 500 to 700 GSM. Teema's own FAQ says weight varies by collection and points to a chart in each product's images, so check the line you are buying rather than assuming.
Are Teema towels real Turkish towels?
Yes. The brand states they are woven in southwestern Turkey in 100% organic Turkish cotton, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, with the flagship Diamante woven on traditional dobby looms. They are flat-woven peshtemals rather than terry, which is why the weights are so much lower than a conventional bath towel.
Where can you buy Teema towels?
Direct from the brand's own store, which runs free US shipping over a threshold, and also through Free People and Walmart; the brand wholesales through Faire. There is no Amazon storefront, so if you want a one-click flat-weave Turkish towel you are choosing between other brands.
What is Teema's return policy?
Returns and exchanges are both accepted within 30 days of delivery, requested by email to the brand with your order number. That is a standard window; the email-based process is slightly more manual than a self-serve returns portal.
Which Teema weave should you choose?
The brand's own guidance is that Labyrinth and Diamante are the looser, softer, more blanket-like weaves, while Simple and Layers are tighter, lighter and more portable. In durability terms the tighter weaves have shorter yarn floats, so they snag less -- which makes them the better choice for a bag, a car or a gym locker.
Are Teema towels absorbent?
At 190 to 220 GSM they absorb by contact rather than by bulk, so you press and wrap rather than rub, and they hold much less water than a terry towel before they need wringing. New cotton also carries waxes that repel water until they wash out, so a new one usually improves over the first three or four washes.
