Buy six 600 GSM cotton hand towels rather than two expensive ones, and change them daily. A hand towel is re-wetted before it can dry, so rotation does more for hygiene, smell and lifespan than any upgrade in quality.
A bath towel is used once or twice a day by one person. A hand towel is used ten or fifteen times a day by everyone in the house, and it never gets more than an hour to dry between uses. It is the most heavily used textile in the home and almost nobody buys it with any care.
