The best hair towel is the Onsen Supima waffle towel: about 410 GSM of extra-long-staple Supima cotton in an open waffle, which is smooth enough not to rough up the hair cuticle and lint-free enough that nothing is left behind in it. For a classic turban wrap, Cacala's 37 x 70 in flat-woven peshtemal is lighter, longer and far easier to tie. For thick or long hair that needs real capacity, Bersuse's Lagos peshtemal has a flat face and a terry reverse, which is the compromise that actually works.
Hair is the one thing a towel touches that can be permanently damaged by the towel. Skin recovers from friction in minutes. A hair cuticle is a layer of overlapping scales, and rubbing a loose, lofty terry pile across it lifts those scales, which is what frizz is. It does not grow back; it grows out.
Which means the specification for a hair towel runs opposite to the specification for a luxurious bath towel. You want a smooth face, short or no pile, low lint, and enough length to wrap rather than rub. Weight, the number most towel marketing is built on, is close to irrelevant.
What a hair towel actually has to do
- Absorb by contact, not by friction. The right technique is to press and squeeze, never to rub. A towel that is good at this has a dense enough face to pull water on contact and a smooth enough one that pressing does not drag.
- Not shed. Lint in wet hair is miserable to get out, and it is worst on dark hair. A towel that keeps shedding is disqualified no matter how soft it feels -- the low-lint picks explain which constructions shed and why.
- Be long enough to wrap. A turban wrap holds itself up and takes weight off the hair roots. A standard 27 x 54 in bath towel barely manages it on short hair; 67 to 74 in is comfortable on anything.
- Dry fast between uses. Hair towels are used wet, twice a day in some households, and go straight back on a hook. A towel that stays damp is where the musty smell starts.
- Be light enough to wear. A soaked 700 GSM bath towel on the head is a genuine strain on the neck and pulls at wet hair, which is the weakest state hair is ever in.
The four, side by side
| Towel | Weave | Fiber | Size | Published weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Onsen Supima Waffle | Open waffle | 100% USA-grown Supima cotton | 31 x 57 in | About 410 GSM |
| Cacala Peshtemal | Flat weave | 100% cotton, OEKO-TEX certified | 37 x 70 in | Not published |
| Bersuse Lagos | Flat face, terry reverse | 100% cotton | 35 x 67 in | Not published |
| JML Microfiber | Microfiber pile | Microfiber (blend not published) | 30 x 60 in | Not published |
Best hair towel overall: Onsen Supima Waffle
About 410 GSM of 100% USA-grown Supima cotton in an open waffle at 31 x 57 in, OEKO-TEX certified. Supima is extra-long-staple cotton, which is the lowest-lint fiber in commercial use, and the waffle structure keeps the yarn inside the cloth rather than standing up as loose pile.
That combination is why it works on hair. There is almost nothing on the surface to catch a cuticle scale, and almost nothing to leave behind. It is light enough wet to wrap without dragging, and it dries between uses in an ordinary bathroom, which plush terry does not.
The cons are real. Waffle feels crisp and textured, and some people dislike it on contact immediately. 31 x 57 in wraps comfortably on short to medium hair and is tight on very long hair. And it is expensive for the weight if you insist on reading towels by the gram.
Best flat-weave hair towel: Cacala Peshtemal
100% OEKO-TEX certified cotton in a flat hammam weave at 37 x 70 in, with hand-tied tassels. A peshtemal is the original hair wrap: almost no pile, a long rectangle, and light enough to twist and tuck in one motion.
Flat weave means there is no loop pile at all, so there is nothing to snag and nothing to shed. At 70 in long it wraps even very long hair with room to tuck, and because it is thin it dries on a hook within the hour -- which matters when it goes back on wet hair tonight.
The cons are capacity and the break-in. A flat weave holds less water than terry, so thick hair will soak it through and need a second pass. A new peshtemal also feels papery until three or four washes soften it, which puts people off before it is at its best. The full peshtemal guide covers the break-in and the tassels.
Best hair towel for thick hair: Bersuse Lagos
100% cotton at 35 x 67 in with a flat-woven face and a terry reverse. It is the deliberate compromise between the two constructions above, and for thick, long or curly hair it is the one that solves the actual problem.
Use it flat-side-in against the hair and the smooth face does the contact work without dragging the cuticle; the terry back is where the volume of water goes. That gives you something close to peshtemal gentleness with something close to terry capacity, in a towel light enough to tie.
The cons are drying time and bulk. The terry side is still terry, so it dries slower than a pure flat weave and needs a hook with air around it rather than a folded rail. No weight is published either, so you are buying a construction rather than a number.
Best quick-dry hair towel: JML Microfiber
30 x 60 in of microfiber with a hanging loop, sold in pairs. If the priority is getting hair from soaking to damp in the shortest possible time -- before work, at the gym, with a newborn in the house -- nothing cotton on this page competes.
The hanging loop is more useful here than on a bath towel, because a hair towel goes back on a hook still wet and needs to be dry again by the evening.
The cons are substantial and you should read them. Microfiber is plastic and sheds synthetic fiber into the wash. The grabby hand that makes it absorbent is the same property that causes breakage on fine or color-treated hair, so press and squeeze with it -- never rub. Fabric softener destroys it permanently; wash it alone with detergent only. Neither the blend ratio nor the weight is published.
Four towels for hair, in order of how gently they move water. The cotton picks are the safe default; the microfiber one is the fast one.

Why a regular bath towel damages hair
Two reasons, and neither is about the towel being cheap. The first is pile geometry: a plush terry towel is thousands of loose loops standing proud of the cloth, and dragging that across hair lifts the cuticle scales that lie flat on a healthy strand. Lifted scales scatter light, which reads as frizz, and catch on each other, which reads as tangling.
The second is weight. A wet 600-700 GSM bath towel wrapped on the head is a surprising load hanging off hair that is at its weakest -- wet hair stretches far more than dry hair before it breaks, and a heavy turban stretches it for twenty minutes at a time.
Neither problem requires a special purchase to fix if you do not want one. Pressing a bath towel against the hair instead of rubbing removes most of the friction damage on its own. But if you are buying anyway, buying the right construction costs the same as buying the wrong one.
How to dry hair with a towel without wrecking it
- Squeeze the bulk of the water out with your hands first, downward, from root to tip. This removes more water than any towel step and does no damage at all.
- Lay the towel over the hair and press. Do not rub, do not scrub at the scalp, do not twist the hair against the cloth.
- If you wrap, lean forward, lay the long edge at the nape, twist the length once and tuck it at the back -- not a tight turban pulling at the hairline.
- Take the wrap off within about ten minutes. A turban left on for an hour is an hour of wet hair under tension.
- Hang the hair towel on a hook, not folded on a rail. A towel used on wet hair twice a day never gets a chance to dry otherwise, and that is where the smell starts.
Hair products are also what eventually kills a hair towel. Leave-in conditioner, oils and silicone build up in the pile and turn it water-repellent, which is the same failure mode as fabric softener. Why towels stop absorbing water covers the strip wash that resets it.

Best hair towel overall
Onsen Supima Waffle Bath Towel
Onsen

An open waffle weave in 100% USA-grown Supima cotton at roughly 410 GSM, built to dry in a fraction of the time a plush terry towel needs.

What we like
- The waffle structure holds the towel open to air, which is why it dries so much faster than terry at the same weight
- Supima is extra-long-staple -- the strongest cotton you can buy in a towel
- Lint-free enough to use on glass and skin without leaving fibers behind
What we do not
- Waffle does not feel plush -- it feels textured and slightly crisp
- Expensive per towel compared with the Turkish-cotton terry field
How it holds up
Extra-long-staple Supima plus an open weave is the combination that ages best in a damp bathroom, because the towel spends less of its life wet. Most towel failure is really mildew and repeated slow drying, not wear.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you want to wrap up in something soft after a bath. This is a towel for drying efficiently, not for lounging.

Best flat-weave hair towel
Cacala Peshtemal Turkish Hammam Towel
Cacala

A traditional flat-woven peshtemal in 100% cotton with hand-tied tassels -- the original Turkish bath towel, not a terry towel with fringe added.
| Fiber | 100% cotton (OEKO-TEX certified) |
|---|---|
| Size | 37 x 70 in (94 x 178 cm) |
| Weave | Flat weave (peshtemal) |
| Finish | Hand-made tassels |
What we like
- Folds to a fraction of a terry towel's bulk -- genuinely useful in a small linen cupboard
- Dries very fast because there is no pile to hold water
- Gets softer with every wash rather than flatter
What we do not
- Day one it feels stiff and does not absorb well -- this is normal and resolves
- Tassels tangle in the machine unless you wash it with like items
How it holds up
A flat weave has no pile to crush, which is why peshtemals routinely outlive terry towels bought at the same time. The failure point is the tassels, not the cloth.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you want to be enveloped in something plush, or if a stiff first month would make you give up on it.

| Size | 35 x 67 in (89 x 170 cm) |
| Construction | Flat-woven face, terry reverse |

What we like
- Solves the single most common complaint about peshtemals -- that they do not feel absorbent
- Still packs smaller than a full terry towel
What we do not
- Heavier and slower to dry than a pure flat weave
- You lose some of the pack-down advantage that makes peshtemals worth owning
How it holds up
A terry back reintroduces the pile that crushes over time, so this will not age quite as gracefully as a pure peshtemal. It is still a flat-weave structure carrying the load.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you want the true peshtemal experience -- half of this towel is a conventional terry towel.

Best quick-dry hair towel
JML Microfiber Bath Towel with Hanging Loop
JML

A 30 x 60 in microfiber towel with a hanging loop, sold in pairs -- not a cotton towel and not pretending to be, but it dries in a fraction of the time.
| Fiber | Microfiber (blend not published) |
|---|---|
| Weight | Not published |
| Construction | Microfiber pile, hanging loop |
| Size | 30 x 60 in (76 x 152 cm) |
| Pack | 2 towels |
#ad How we are funded · Price as of November 3, 2026
What we like
- Dries far faster than any cotton towel, which is the entire point of a gym or travel towel
- 30 x 60 in is bath-sheet size in something that packs down small
- The loop means it can hang off a locker hook or a tent line rather than sit damp in a bag
What we do not
- Microfiber is plastic: it sheds synthetic fibers in the wash and it is not a cotton towel
- The grabby, squeaky hand against skin is a real dislike for a lot of people
- Fabric softener ruins its absorbency permanently -- there is no recovering it
- Neither the blend ratio nor the weight is published
How it holds up
Microfiber fails differently from cotton: it does not thin or go bald, it goes slick and stops lifting water, usually because softener or dryer sheets have coated the fibers. Wash it alone, with detergent only, and it keeps working for years. Use it as the bathroom's only towel and it will annoy you long before it wears out.
Who should skip it
Skip it as a main bathroom towel. This is a second towel for the gym bag, the car or a windowless bathroom where nothing cotton ever dries.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best towel for drying hair?
The Onsen Supima waffle towel is the best overall: extra-long-staple Supima cotton in an open waffle at about 410 GSM, which is smooth, very low lint and light enough to wrap. For a classic turban, Cacala's 37 x 70 in flat-woven peshtemal is easier to tie and faster to dry; for thick hair, Bersuse's Lagos peshtemal pairs a flat face with a terry back.
Are microfiber hair towels better than cotton?
Faster, not automatically gentler. Microfiber lifts water quickly because the fiber is grabby, and that same grab can cause breakage on fine or chemically treated hair. It is also plastic and is ruined permanently by fabric softener. Cotton in a flat or waffle weave is the safer default; microfiber is the one to pick when speed is the whole point.
Why does my hair frizz after towel drying?
Because rubbing a plush terry pile across hair lifts the cuticle scales that normally lie flat. Lifted scales scatter light, which looks like frizz, and catch on each other, which causes tangles. Press and squeeze with the towel instead of rubbing, and use a smoother weave.
Can you use a regular bath towel on your hair?
Yes, and most people do. Press rather than rub and it causes very little damage. The reason to buy a dedicated hair towel is that plush terry has loose loops that catch the cuticle and a wet bath towel is heavy enough to pull on wet hair, which is hair at its most stretchable.
How long should you leave a towel wrapped on your hair?
About ten minutes. The wrap is there to absorb the free water, not to dry the hair. Leaving a heavy turban on for an hour keeps wet hair under tension at the hairline, which is where that kind of breakage shows up first.
Is a Turkish towel good for hair?
Yes, and it is one of the best options. A flat-woven peshtemal has no loop pile to catch the cuticle, nothing to shed, and enough length to wrap easily at 70 in. The trade is capacity -- a flat weave holds less water than terry, so very thick hair may need a second pass.
What size should a hair towel be?
Long rather than wide. Anything from about 60 to 74 in long wraps comfortably on most hair lengths and tucks without pulling. A standard 27 x 54 in bath towel is workable on short hair and awkward on long hair.
