Brooklinen vs Boll & Branch Towels: Weight Against Weave

Two Turkish-cotton towels at similar money that made opposite engineering choices. One of them tells you its weight.

Terry & Tub is reader-funded. Every buy button here goes to Amazon and earns us a commission at no extra cost to you. Brands we cannot earn from are reviewed anyway when they are the right answer, with a citation instead of a buy button. Full disclosure.

Buy the Boll & Branch Turkish Ribbed towel if your bathroom does not dry quickly: it is organic extra-long-staple Aegean cotton in a channeled ribbed weave that lets air through, and it will outlast a heavier towel in a damp room. Buy the Brooklinen Super-Plush if you want a genuinely plush towel and have a rail -- it is 770 GSM of zero-twist Aegean cotton, and it is the better towel for someone who wants to sink into it.

These two brands get compared constantly because they occupy the same shelf: direct-to-consumer, Aegean Turkish cotton, similar money, both now also selling on Amazon. What makes the comparison interesting is that they made opposite decisions about the same problem.

Brooklinen spent the budget on weight and softness. Boll & Branch spent it on fiber length and airflow. Both are defensible, and they suit different bathrooms.

Two things in that table decide most of the argument. Brooklinen publishes a weight and Boll & Branch does not, which is a real gap at this price -- "midweight" is a description. And Boll & Branch specifies extra-long-staple where Brooklinen specifies long-staple Aegean, which is a genuine fiber advantage.

The Brooklinen decision: weight, honestly revised

The Super-Plush launched at 820 GSM and Brooklinen reduced it to 770 GSM after customers said it took too long to dry. That is worth noting because it is rare: most brands defend the number rather than change it.

770 GSM is still at the top of the practical range for a daily bathroom. Paired with zero-twist yarn -- which opens the fiber up so it absorbs faster than its weight suggests -- you get a towel that soaks water up very quickly and then has a great deal of water to get rid of.

The trade with zero-twist is structural. Untwisting yarn increases surface area and softness at the cost of yarn strength, so a pulled loop matters more than on a twisted-yarn towel. What zero twist actually means.

The Boll & Branch decision: fiber and airflow

The Turkish Ribbed is organic extra-long-staple Aegean cotton in an airloomed double-spun yarn, woven as a channeled rib. The rib leaves air gaps running through the pile, so the towel dries substantially faster than a flat terry towel of the same hand.

That is the right set of priorities for a towel meant to last, because dry time is the strongest predictor of towel lifespan: most towels are retired for mildew, smell and lost absorbency rather than for wear. The short structured loops also have very little for a ring or a clasp to catch.

The gap is the missing weight. At this price we would want a number, and we hold it against the brand rather than filling it in.

The bath sheets

Both offer the format and they diverge further at the big size, because weight compounds with area.

Brooklinen's Super-Plush bath sheet is 40 x 65 in at 770 GSM of zero-twist Aegean cotton -- the largest and heaviest towel in this comparison by a wide margin, and genuinely too much towel for a bathroom that does not dry quickly. Boll & Branch's ribbed bath sheet is 36 x 70 in in the same organic ELS cotton and ribbed weave, which is the only one of the two we would put in an average bathroom.

If you are weighing up the format at all, are bath sheets worth it runs the four questions that decide it.

The towel both of them have to beat

Neither brand is competing only with the other. The Chakir Turkish Linens Hotel & Spa towel is 550-600 GSM of long-staple Turkish cotton built to hotel laundry specification, with a published weight, for a fraction of either price.

It is crisper than both and it has no design story. If you cannot articulate what the premium is buying you over that towel, the premium is not buying you anything -- and that is a fair test to apply to any luxury towel. The luxury towel roundup applies it to five.

The two towels under comparison, the Boll & Branch bath sheet as the better big-format option, and the hotel-spec towel that sets the value floor for both.

The verdict

Boll & Branch makes the better-engineered towel and tells you less about it. Brooklinen makes the more enjoyable towel and tells you more about it, including revising a number downward when it was wrong.

On this site's lens -- which towel is still good in 2032 -- the Boll & Branch ribbed wins, because extra-long-staple fiber in a weave that dries is the combination that gets a towel there. If what you want from a towel is to enjoy it every morning rather than to still own it in eight years, buy the Brooklinen and put it on a rail. Frequently asked questions

Are Brooklinen or Boll & Branch towels better?

Boll & Branch makes the better-engineered towel: organic extra-long-staple Aegean cotton in a ribbed weave that lets air through, which is the combination that lasts. Brooklinen makes the more enjoyable towel at 770 GSM of zero-twist cotton, and it is the better buy if you want plush and have real airflow.

What GSM are Brooklinen Super-Plush towels?

770 GSM, reduced from an original 820 GSM after customers reported that they took too long to dry. It is still at the top of the practical weight range for a daily bathroom.

What GSM are Boll & Branch Turkish Ribbed towels?

Boll & Branch does not publish a weight for them and describes them as midweight. At this price that is a genuine gap in the specification, and we would not estimate a number on the brand's behalf.

Is zero-twist cotton better in a towel?

It is a trade rather than an upgrade. Untwisting the yarn increases surface area, so the towel absorbs faster and feels softer, and it reduces yarn strength, so a pulled loop matters more. Excellent in a household without claws or rough rail hardware.

Are Boll & Branch towels worth the price?

The fiber and the weave are where the money went, which is the right order -- extra-long-staple cotton and an open rib are the two things that decide how a towel ages. The missing GSM is a fair criticism, and a 550-600 GSM hotel-spec towel costs a fraction as much and publishes its weight.

Which brand's bath sheet should you buy?

Boll & Branch's, at 36 x 70 in in the ribbed weave. Brooklinen's is 40 x 65 in at 770 GSM, which is a great deal of cotton holding a great deal of water -- fine with a heated rail, too much for an ordinary bathroom.

Can you buy Brooklinen and Boll & Branch towels on Amazon?

Both brands now list towels on Amazon alongside their own sites. The specifications are the same; what differs is availability of individual colorways and sizes between the two channels.
