Costco Towels: What the Labels Say, and What They Leave Out

Costco sells two quite different towels under two house-adjacent brands, and only one of them tells you its weight.

Terry & Tub is reader-funded. Every buy button here goes to Amazon and earns us a commission at no extra cost to you. Brands we cannot earn from are reviewed anyway when they are the right answer, with a citation instead of a buy button. Full disclosure.

Costco's two main bath towel lines are Grandeur Hospitality, a two-ply ring-spun 100% cotton towel at 30 x 54 in, OEKO-TEX Made in Green certified and made in India, sold in six-packs; and Charisma, a 650 GSM 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton towel at 30 x 58 in, sold in small sets. Grandeur does not publish a GSM. Charisma does, and at 650 GSM it is the heavier and better-specified of the two.

Costco towel buying has a specific shape to it. The selection rotates, the warehouse stock differs from the online stock, and the specifications printed on the band are usually thinner than what a good Amazon listing gives you. So the useful thing is not a ranking -- it is knowing what each line actually is, and what the label is not telling you.

What Costco actually sells

Published specifications for Costco's two main bath towel lines, as listed at the time of writing. Stock and pricing vary by warehouse.

Note the asymmetry. Grandeur publishes a certification, an origin and a yarn construction but no weight. Charisma publishes a weight and a cotton grade but neither certification nor origin. Between them you get most of a specification and from neither do you get all of it.

Grandeur Hospitality, read honestly

The two things on this label that are genuinely worth something are "ring spun" and "two-ply". Ring spinning twists the fibers around each other carefully so fewer short fiber ends poke out of the yarn, and those ends are what pill, shed and lint. Two-ply means two yarns twisted together, which is stronger than single-ply at the same weight.

OEKO-TEX Made in Green is a real certification and it covers chemical safety and production conditions. It says nothing about durability, which is a thing people routinely misread.

What is missing is the weight and the staple length. Without a GSM you cannot predict absorbency or dry time, and without a staple length you cannot predict whether the towel softens with washing or thins. At a warehouse price that is an acceptable gap; it is also why this is a value towel rather than a good towel. The name invokes hospitality linen, and genuine hotel-supply towels publish a weight.

Charisma, read honestly

650 GSM of long-staple Egyptian cotton at 30 x 58 in is a real specification and a good one. 650 sits in the band where a towel is properly absorbent and still dries, and long-staple Egyptian cotton lints less and thins more slowly than unlabeled cotton.

It is sold in small sets rather than six-packs, which changes what it is for: this is the towel you buy for your own bathroom, not the one you buy to kit out a rental. Availability is the real caveat -- it rotates in and out of both warehouse and online stock, and a towel line you cannot reliably top up is a towel line you have to buy deep the first time.

"Egyptian cotton" is also an unprotected phrase. 650 GSM and "long-staple" together make it a credible claim here; on a label with neither, it would not be. How to tell when Egyptian cotton is worth paying for.

Buying towels at Costco, practically

  1. Buy deep on the first trip. Warehouse stock rotates, and a rail you cannot top up in a year is a rail you replace entirely.
  2. Check the piece breakdown. A warehouse towel pack is usually all bath towels, which is unusual and good -- but confirm it rather than assuming.
  3. Pick white. It is the only towel color with a recovery path, and it is the colorway most likely to stay in the range. Why white is restorable.
  4. Check the band for a GSM before you check anything else. If it is absent, you are buying on yarn construction. That is fine if you know you are doing it.
  5. Do not assume the online listing and the warehouse are the same product. Costco frequently runs different pack sizes and sometimes different specifications through the two channels.

The four we would buy instead

Each of these answers one of the jobs the Costco lines are bought for, with a fuller specification.

Chakir Turkish Linens Hotel & Spa is the honest version of what the Grandeur name implies: 550-600 GSM of long-staple Turkish cotton to an actual hotel-and-spa specification, OEKO-TEX certified, with the weight published. If you liked the idea of hospitality linen, this is it.

Superior Egyptian Cotton Plush is the Egyptian-cotton answer: Egyptian cotton pile at 30 x 55 in with a braided woven border rather than a folded hem, OEKO-TEX certified. It does not publish a GSM either -- which we say plainly -- and the braided border is a construction advantage Charisma does not claim.

American Soft Linen 600 GSM is the fullest specification in this price bracket anywhere: 600 GSM, 100% Turkish cotton, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, double-stitched long sides, in four- and six-piece sets. All four fields answered.

Utopia Towels ring-spun is the warehouse-volume answer: ring-spun cotton in bulk packs, bought as a deliberate three-to-four-year towel. Same logic as a six-pack of Grandeur, available any week of the year.

One towel for each job the Costco lines get bought for, chosen because their listings publish more than Costco's bands do.

Is Costco a good place to buy towels?

For volume, yes. A six-pack of ring-spun two-ply cotton towels at a warehouse price is a genuinely sensible purchase for a guest bathroom, a rental or a household that gets through towels. What to buy for a short let runs the same arithmetic.

For a towel you want to still own in eight years, the problem is not quality, it is information and continuity: you cannot compare what you are not told, and you cannot top up a line that has rotated out. Both of those are solved problems on a good Amazon listing, which is the practical reason this site's picks sit there. How to audit any towel listing in two minutes.

Costco is not the only mass retailer worth reading label-first. Target towels, read the same way is the same exercise in the other big aisle -- where the certification is better than Costco's and the published weight is worse.

The same exercise on the third big-box range completes the picture, and the pattern holds: the top tier publishes its numbers and the middle tier does not. Walmart bath towels, read spec by spec covers Mainstays, Better Homes & Gardens and Hotel Style.

Frequently asked questions

What towels does Costco sell?

Two main bath towel lines: Grandeur Hospitality, a two-ply ring-spun 100% cotton towel at 30 x 54 in, OEKO-TEX Made in Green certified and made in India, usually in six-packs; and Charisma, a 650 GSM long-staple Egyptian cotton towel at 30 x 58 in in small sets. Stock rotates and differs between warehouse and online.

Are Costco towels good quality?

The Charisma line is well specified at 650 GSM of long-staple Egyptian cotton. Grandeur Hospitality is a sound value towel -- ring-spun and two-ply are real construction advantages -- but it does not publish a weight or a staple length, so you cannot predict absorbency, dry time or how it will age.

What GSM are Costco Grandeur Hospitality towels?

Costco does not publish one. The listing gives the size, the fiber, a two-ply construction, the OEKO-TEX Made in Green certification and an Indian origin, but no weight. We will not estimate a figure the manufacturer has not stated.

Are Charisma towels Egyptian cotton?

The current Costco Charisma bath towel listing states 100% Egyptian cotton and describes it as long-staple, at 650 GSM over a 30 x 58 in towel. Those two facts together make the Egyptian claim credible, which it would not be on a label that gave neither.

Does Costco sell Kirkland Signature bath towels?

We found no Kirkland Signature bath towel in the current range -- the Kirkland Signature bath products we could verify were paper goods. Costco's towel range runs under Grandeur Hospitality and Charisma instead.

Should you buy towels at Costco?

For volume -- a guest bathroom, a rental, a household that gets through towels -- it is a sensible purchase. For a towel you want to keep for years, the limits are information and continuity: the bands publish less than a good retail listing, and lines rotate out so you cannot top up a rail later.

How big are Costco bath towels?

Grandeur Hospitality bath towels are 30 x 54 in and Charisma bath towels are 30 x 58 in. Both are wider than the 27 x 54 in standard most towel brands use, which is worth knowing if you are matching an existing rail.
