Target Towels: What Threshold and Casaluna Publish, and What They Hide

Target is unusually good at publishing a certification and unusually coy about publishing a weight. Both facts change what you should buy there.

Terry & Tub is reader-funded. Every buy button here goes to Amazon and earns us a commission at no extra cost to you. Brands we cannot earn from are reviewed anyway when they are the right answer, with a citation instead of a buy button. Full disclosure.

Target sells bath towels under two house brands. Threshold is the everyday line: 100% cotton terry, OEKO-TEX Made in Green certified, with a hanging loop, published only as "Heavyweight (550-800 GSM)" rather than as a figure. Casaluna is the upper line: 100% organic cotton, also OEKO-TEX Made in Green, and its Organic bath towel is the one Target towel that states a real weight -- 700 gsm at 30 x 56 in. If you want a specification you can compare, buy the Casaluna. If you want volume, Threshold is a sound certified towel bought on faith about its density.

Target is a better towel retailer than it gets credit for, and the reason is boring: it publishes a real textile certification on its own-brand towels, which most mass retailers do not. It is also frustrating in one specific way, and that is where this page spends its time.

What Target actually sells

Published specifications for Target's three main bath towel lines, as listed at the time of writing. Blanks are fields Target does not publish.

Three things jump out of that table, and all three should change how you shop the aisle.

The good part: every line carries a real certification

OEKO-TEX Made in Green is not a marketing badge. It is a certification with a traceable number -- Target publishes them, down to the issuing institute -- and it covers two separate things: that the finished textile has been tested for harmful substances, and that it was made in socially responsible, environmentally responsible facilities.

What it does not cover is durability. A Made in Green towel can still thin, pill and go bald in two years, because nothing in the standard measures how the cloth wears. This is the single most-misread label in the category: people read a certification as a quality grade when it is a chemistry-and-conditions grade. Worth having, not worth confusing. It is also the cheapest piece of evidence a towel line can carry, which is why its absence elsewhere is worth noticing -- what onuia's listing leaves out is the same point from the other direction.

The frustrating part: a band is not a weight

"Heavyweight (550-800 GSM)" is a 250-point range, and the difference between its ends is the difference between two different towels. A 550 GSM towel dries on a rail overnight in an average bathroom. An 800 GSM towel in the same bathroom is still damp the following evening, which is how towels end up musty. What GSM actually predicts walks the bands properly.

So on the Threshold lines you are buying a certified cotton towel of genuinely unknown density. That is fine at Threshold's price. It is not fine if you are making a decision about whether the towel will dry in a windowless bathroom, which is the most common reason a towel purchase fails.

The exception is the Casaluna Organic bath towel, where Target states 700 gsm outright. That single number makes it the easiest Target towel to shop and the one that can be compared against anything else on this site.

The detail nobody mentions: the loop

Every Target towel line above lists a hanging loop, and that is a quietly excellent decision. A towel hung from a loop hangs in one layer and dries from both faces; a towel folded in half over a rail dries from two of four faces and stays damp in the fold. Dry time is what decides whether towels smell, so the loop does more for a household than another hundred GSM would. The best towels with hanging loops is the roundup if that is the feature you came for.

Line by line, read honestly

Threshold Performance Plus

100% cotton terry at 30 x 54 in -- wider than the 27 x 54 in standard most towel brands use, which matters if you are matching an existing rail. Certified, fade-resistant, looped, sold as single pieces rather than sets so you can buy exactly what you need and top up later. The gap is the weight and the yarn: no figure, no staple length, no spinning method. Bought as a solid everyday towel it is a reasonable buy. Bought as a long-term towel it is a guess.

Threshold Oversized Spa Plush

65 x 33 in is bath-sheet territory, and the listed "zero twist" is a real construction claim rather than an adjective: untwisted yarn exposes more fiber surface, so it feels softer and absorbs faster at the same weight. The trade is that untwisted loops are more fragile and snag more easily, and that a sheet this size at an unstated heavyweight density is the slowest-drying towel in the store. Bath sheet or bath towel is the decision to make before you buy one.

Casaluna Organic

700 gsm of 100% organic cotton at 56 x 30 in, OEKO-TEX Made in Green, low-lint and fade-resistant claims, hanging loop, and a bath sheet in the same line. This is a properly specified towel and the best thing in Target's towel aisle on paper. Two honest caveats: 700 gsm needs a rail with airflow, and "organic" is a claim about how the cotton was farmed, not about how long the towel lasts. There is also a textured version of the same towel with fringed edges, which is the same cloth with a decorative edge that will fray sooner than a stitched hem.

Buying towels at Target, practically

  1. Check whether the listing gives a figure or a band. A real gsm number is the difference between a comparable towel and a photograph. Casaluna Organic gives one; the Threshold lines do not.
  2. Buy singles, not sets, where you can. Target's biggest structural advantage over set-based brands is that bath towels, hand towels and washcloths are sold separately, so you can buy four bath towels and two hand towels instead of a set with four washcloths you do not want.
  3. Pick white if you intend to keep them. White is the only towel color with a recovery path when it goes gray. Why white is restorable.
  4. Read the certification as safety, not quality. Made in Green is real and it says nothing about wear.
  5. Use the loop. Hang towels from it rather than folding them over the bar, and the towels will outlast the ones your neighbors bought.

The five we would buy instead

Each of these answers one of the jobs Target's lines get bought for, with a fuller specification attached.

BIOWEAVES Organic 700 GSM is the Casaluna answer: the same weight, the same organic story, but with a GOTS certification -- which covers the organic claim across the whole supply chain rather than testing the finished cloth -- plus a stated two-ply low-twist yarn and a named country of manufacture.

American Soft Linen 600 GSM is the Performance Plus answer: a published 600 GSM, 100% long-staple Turkish cotton, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, double-stitched long sides, in four- and six-piece sets. Every field Threshold leaves blank is filled in.

Brooklinen Super-Plush bath sheet is the oversized Spa Plush answer: 770 GSM of zero-twist Aegean Turkish cotton at 40 x 65 in, with the weight published rather than banded. It is the plush, slow-drying towel done deliberately -- and we say plainly that at 770 GSM it needs a rail and airflow.

SEMAXE's looped four-pack is for the shopper whose favorite part of the Target towel was the loop. Four cotton bath towels at 55 x 27 in, a loop on every one, in a single order. It publishes no weight, which we say plainly, and it is bought for the loop rather than for the cloth.

Utopia Towels ring-spun is the volume answer: ring-spun cotton in bulk packs, available any week of the year, bought as a deliberate three-to-four-year towel. The cost-per-year arithmetic is why that is a sensible purchase rather than a compromise.

One towel for each job Target's lines get bought for, chosen because their listings publish more than Target's do.

Is Target a good place to buy towels?

Yes, with one condition. The certification is real, the loop is on every line, the sizes are generous and you can buy pieces individually instead of sets -- that is a better baseline than most mass retailers manage. The condition is that you accept you are buying an unstated density on the Threshold lines, or you buy the Casaluna Organic, where the number is printed.

For a towel you expect to still own in eight years, the limit is information rather than quality: you cannot compare a band against a figure, and durability depends on the yarn spec that no Target listing gives. Both are solved problems on a good Amazon listing, which is the practical reason this site's picks sit there. How to audit any towel listing in two minutes, and what the warehouse clubs publish for the same comparison at Costco.

Walmart's own-brand tiers are differentiated in a similar way and are worth reading side by side with these. The Walmart towel guide goes through all three lines and the specifications each one leaves out.

Frequently asked questions

What towels does Target sell?

Two house brands. Threshold is the everyday line -- 100% cotton terry, OEKO-TEX Made in Green, hanging loop, sold as single pieces, in Performance Plus and Oversized Spa Plush versions among others. Casaluna is the upper line, in 100% organic cotton, also OEKO-TEX Made in Green, with the Organic bath towel published at 700 gsm.

Are Target towels good quality?

They are certified, generously sized and every line has a hanging loop, which is a better baseline than most mass retailers. The limitation is that the Threshold lines publish only a weight band -- "Heavyweight (550-800 GSM)" -- rather than a figure, and no yarn construction, so you cannot predict dry time or how they will wear. The Casaluna Organic towel does publish a figure and is the easiest to shop on specification.

What GSM are Threshold towels?

Target does not publish a figure for them. The listings state a weight type of "Heavyweight (550-800 GSM)", which is a 250-point range. We will not estimate a number the retailer has not stated.

What GSM is the Casaluna bath towel?

Target publishes 700 gsm for the Casaluna Organic bath towel, at 56 x 30 in in 100% organic cotton. It is the only Target towel line we found that states a weight rather than a band.

Is Threshold or Casaluna better?

Casaluna, if you are buying on specification: it publishes a real weight, uses organic cotton and carries the same certification. Threshold is the better buy for volume and for topping up single pieces, and it is wider at 30 x 54 in than the 27 x 54 in standard.

Are Target towels OEKO-TEX certified?

The Threshold and Casaluna bath towels we checked all carry OEKO-TEX Made in Green, with the certificate number and issuing institute published on the product page. That covers testing for harmful substances and the conditions in the facilities that made it. It says nothing about durability.

Do Target towels have hanging loops?

Yes -- the Threshold Performance Plus, Threshold Oversized Spa Plush and Casaluna Organic listings all state a hanging loop. It is the most underrated feature in the aisle, because a towel hung from a loop dries from both faces instead of staying damp in a fold.
