Onuia Towels Review: A Good Spec Band, Thin Paperwork

The listing publishes the two numbers that matter and none of the paperwork that would justify the price. Both halves of that are worth knowing before you order.

Terry & Tub is reader-funded. Every buy button here goes to Amazon and earns us a commission at no extra cost to you. Brands we cannot earn from are reviewed anyway when they are the right answer, with a citation instead of a buy button. Full disclosure.

onuia's Ultrasoft bath towel bundle is 600 GSM in 100% long-staple cotton, woven as terry, at roughly 28 x 55 in per bath towel. That is a genuinely sensible specification -- 600 GSM is the band where a towel absorbs properly and still dries between uses. What the listing does not publish is a certification, a country of origin, or a yarn construction, and those are the three things that would explain its price. If the spec band is what you are buying, you can buy the same band for less elsewhere.

onuia is one of a small group of towel brands that arrived through advertising rather than through retail, which is why "onuia towels reviews" is searched far more often than the brand's own name. The question behind that search is almost always the same: is this a real towel at a fair price, or a well-marketed one? The answer is in what the listing publishes and what it does not.

What onuia actually sells

The brand's own site lists towels in three families plus bedding, bath mats and robes. The towel ranges are the only part relevant here.

onuia's published towel lines, as listed on the brand's site and its Amazon storefront at the time of writing. Blanks are fields the brand does not publish.

The Ultrasoft line is the one sold as a bundle on Amazon and the one worth discussing, because it is the only line where the two specifications that predict performance are both stated. The waffle and striped ranges publish neither a weight nor a fiber, which makes them unbuyable on paper regardless of how they look.

What the 600 GSM listing gets right

600 GSM is the correct answer for a main bathroom towel. It is dense enough to lift water off skin in one pass and light enough to dry fully on a rail between showers. Heavier is not better: an 800 GSM towel in a bathroom with an extractor fan and no window is a towel that is still damp at the next shower, and a towel that never fully dries is the towel that goes musty and then goes gray. What GSM actually predicts runs through the bands.

Long-staple cotton is the single best durability signal on a towel label. Longer fibers mean fewer loose ends in the yarn, and loose ends are what pill, shed and lint. A towel described as long-staple will usually soften through its first year rather than thin. Every cotton term on a towel label, decoded explains why the word "premium" next to it adds nothing.

It is sold as a bundle. That sounds like a marketing decision and it is also a practical advantage: a whole bathroom gets replaced in one order, in one dye lot, which is the only reliable way to get towels that match in two years' time.

What the listing leaves out

No certification. There is no OEKO-TEX or GOTS number anywhere on the listing or the brand site. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is cheap for a manufacturer to carry and almost every serious towel line on Amazon in this price bracket publishes it. Its absence is not evidence of a problem; it is the absence of the cheapest available piece of evidence.

No country of origin. Towel quality tracks the mill, and mills cluster by country -- Turkey, India, Portugal and China all behave differently. A towel that will not say where it was woven is asking you to judge the cloth by its photograph.

No yarn construction. Nothing published says whether the pile is ring-spun, two-ply or zero-twist. Those are the specs that decide pilling, lint and how the towel looks at year three. A 600 GSM towel of unknown yarn is a good band of unknown construction -- the equivalent of being told an engine's displacement but not how many cylinders it has.

No published weight at all for the waffle and striped lines. If you are shopping those, you are shopping on photography.

The Egyptian cotton question

onuia towels are frequently described around the web as Egyptian cotton. That phrase does not appear on the Amazon listing this page links to, which claims "100% long staple premium cotton" -- long-staple, not Egyptian. The two are not the same claim. Egyptian cotton is a geographic term about where the cotton was grown; long-staple is a measurable property of the fiber. Long-staple is the more useful of the two and the only one onuia makes here.

That is worth knowing in both directions. If you came looking for Egyptian cotton, this is not it on the strength of the listing. If you came looking for a towel that will last, long-staple is the claim you actually wanted. Are Egyptian cotton towels worth it? covers why the phrase is unprotected and what to look for instead.

Who you are buying from

onuia publishes two addresses: a suite address in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and an address on Prinsengracht in Amsterdam, alongside a Dutch tax number and a company number. In other words, a Netherlands-based operation with a US registered presence, selling direct and through Amazon. That is a perfectly ordinary structure for a young direct-to-consumer brand. It is also worth knowing before you spend, for one practical reason: a return across that structure and a return inside Amazon's own returns system are not the same experience.

So if you want to try these towels, buy them on Amazon rather than direct. Not for our benefit -- the price is similar either way -- but because Amazon's return window is the only part of this transaction you can predict with certainty.

How it compares to towels that publish more

The onuia Ultrasoft against three towels bought for the same job. Every figure here is the manufacturer's published specification.

That table is the whole review in one view. The onuia row is not a bad row -- it is a row with two fields filled in where the alternatives have four. At a materially lower price that trade would be fine, which is how most of this site's budget picks are chosen. At a premium price it is the wrong way round.

American Soft Linen's 600 GSM towel is the direct substitute: the same weight, the same long-staple Turkish cotton, an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 number, double-stitched long sides, and it is sold in four- and six-piece sets so the bundle logic still works.

Chakir Turkish Linens Hotel & Spa is the one to buy if what you actually liked was the hotel idea: 550-600 GSM of long-staple Turkish cotton woven to a hotel-and-spa specification, certified, with the mill country stated.

BIOWEAVES is the answer if the thing you wanted was proof rather than adjectives: GOTS-certified organic cotton at a published 700 GSM in a two-ply low-twist yarn. It is the heaviest of the four and it needs a rail with airflow, which is the honest caveat.

The towel this page is about, and the three we would put next to it. Prices move; the specifications do not.

Who should buy onuia towels

  • Buy them if you want one order that re-kits a bathroom in a single colorway, you like the look, and a 600 GSM long-staple terry towel is the brief. On the specification band alone, it is a correct towel.
  • Skip them if you buy on evidence. There are towels at this weight with a certification number, a mill country and a yarn spec, usually for less money.
  • Skip them if you need to top up a rail later. Bundles are sold as bundles, and a single replacement towel in the same colorway is not something you can count on.
  • Skip the waffle and striped lines entirely until onuia publishes a weight for them. A waffle towel can be excellent or useless depending on its density, and there is no way to tell which from the page.

The thing that will decide your experience anyway

Whichever of these you buy, the first wash matters more than the brand. New towels carry a factory finish that sits on the fiber and repels water, which is why a brand-new towel often feels great and absorbs badly. Wash it before first use, skip the fabric softener permanently, and use roughly half the detergent you think you need. How to wash new towels is the short version, and why towels stop absorbing water is what happens when nobody does it.

Frequently asked questions

Are onuia towels any good?

On specification, the Ultrasoft line is a sound towel: 600 GSM of 100% long-staple cotton in a terry weave is the right band and the right fiber claim for a main bathroom towel. What is missing is corroboration -- no certification, no country of origin and no yarn construction is published, so there is less evidence behind it than behind similarly priced towels.

What GSM are onuia towels?

The Ultrasoft bath towel line is published at 600 GSM. The brand also lists an 800 GSM Heavyweight line. The waffle and striped ranges do not publish a weight at all.

Are onuia towels Egyptian cotton?

The Amazon listing claims "100% long staple premium cotton" and does not use the words Egyptian cotton. Long-staple is a property of the fiber and Egyptian is a claim about where it was grown; they are different claims. Judge these towels on the long-staple claim, which is the more useful one anyway.

Where are onuia towels made?

Not published. The brand lists corporate addresses in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Amsterdam, but neither the listing nor the brand site states where the towels are woven.

Are onuia towels OEKO-TEX certified?

No certification number appears on the Amazon listing or the brand site. That is not evidence of a problem, but OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is inexpensive for a mill to carry and most towel lines at this price publish it, so its absence is a gap in the paperwork.

Is onuia a legitimate company?

It publishes a company number, a Dutch tax number, a Netherlands address and a US address, and it sells through Amazon as well as direct. If you want to try the towels, buying through Amazon gives you a return process you can predict, which is the practical reason to prefer it.

What are the best alternatives to onuia towels?

American Soft Linen's 600 GSM Turkish cotton towel is the closest match on specification with an OEKO-TEX number attached. Chakir Turkish Linens Hotel & Spa is the hotel-weight alternative at 550-600 GSM with the mill country stated. BIOWEAVES is the choice if you want a GOTS certification and a published 700 GSM.
