Walmart sells bath towels under three own-brand tiers, and they are genuinely different products. Mainstays is the entry line: 100% cotton at 52 x 27 in with a published 438 GSM. Better Homes & Gardens sits in the middle -- the Signature Soft towel is 30 x 56 in in 90% US cotton and 10% viscose, with no weight stated. Hotel Style is the top tier, and the six-piece Egyptian cotton striped set is the one worth attention: 100% Egyptian cotton loops at a published 650 GSM, with bath towels at 58 x 30 in. If you want a hotel-weight towel from Walmart, Hotel Style is the only line that publishes the numbers to back the claim.
We have not laundered these for a year and will not pretend otherwise. What follows is what the listings publish, read the same way we read every other towel on this site -- weight, fiber, size, construction -- plus what each line's silences tell you. That is a more useful exercise on a retailer's own brands than on most, because the three tiers are deliberately differentiated and the differences are legible.
The three lines, side by side
| Line | Published weight | Fiber | Bath towel size | Position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mainstays | 438 GSM | 100% cotton | 52 x 27 in | Entry |
| Better Homes & Gardens Signature Soft | Not published | 90% US cotton, 10% viscose | 30 x 56 in | Mid |
| Hotel Style Egyptian Cotton (6-piece set) | 650 GSM | 100% Egyptian cotton loops | 58 x 30 in | Top |
| Hotel Style Luxury Bath Set (6-piece) | Not published | 100% U.S. cotton | Not published on the set listing | Top |
Mainstays: the specification is better than the reputation
438 GSM of 100% cotton at 52 x 27 in. Mainstays gets written off as the cheap towel, and the published figure is more honest than most towels at any price: a lot of entry-tier lines publish no weight at all, and 438 GSM is a real number you can plan around.
What 438 GSM means in practice: this is a light-to-medium towel. It will dry quickly -- genuinely an advantage in a small bathroom -- and it will feel thin next to a 600 GSM towel. For a rental, a garage bathroom, a beach bag or a household that is hard on towels, light and cheap is a defensible specification rather than a failure.
What the listing does not say is the staple class or the spinning method, and that is the gap that matters. 100% cotton with no further detail means ordinary short-staple cotton, which is the thing that predicts lint and thinning. Expect a long shedding-in period and expect it to go thin at the fold lines sooner than a long-staple towel at the same weight. Why staple length matters more than weight is the underlying argument.
Better Homes & Gardens: the viscose is the story
The Signature Soft Solid towel is 30 x 56 in in 90% US cotton and 10% viscose. The size is generous -- 30 x 56 in is a real bath towel rather than the 27 in standard -- and US-grown cotton is a meaningful claim, since US cotton includes the Pima and Supima varieties.
The 10% viscose is there for hand-feel. Viscose is soft and slick and it is what makes a blended towel feel luxurious in a store. It is also weaker when wet than cotton, which is the state a towel spends its working life in, and it is the component that will break down first.
No weight is published for this line, which on a mid-tier towel is a real gap -- it is the one number that would let you compare it with the tier above and below. Treat the blend as a softness feature you are paying for with wet-strength, which is the same trade bamboo and viscose blends make across the whole category.
Hotel Style: the only line that backs the claim
The six-piece Egyptian cotton striped set publishes 650 GSM and 100% Egyptian cotton loops, with bath towels at 58 x 30 in, hand towels at 30 x 16 in and washcloths at 13 x 13 in. That is a complete specification by the standards of this category, and it is the Walmart line we would actually consider.
650 GSM is a genuine hotel weight -- heavier than the 550-600 band that hospitality suppliers mostly use, and about where a plush retail towel sits. 58 x 30 in is generous. Egyptian cotton loops is a fiber claim about the part of the towel that does the work, which is more precise than a blanket Egyptian cotton label on a whole product.
The cautions are two. Egyptian cotton is a geographic term rather than a quality grade -- it is not legally protected and says nothing about staple length on its own. And at 650 GSM in a bathroom without real airflow you are back to the drying problem. When Egyptian cotton is worth paying for covers the first; the GSM guide covers the second.
The separate Hotel Style Luxury Bath Set in 100% U.S. cotton publishes neither a weight nor a towel size on the set listing, which makes it harder to place. Same tier, less information.
What to compare them against
The useful comparison is not Walmart versus Amazon as retailers -- White Classic's 30 x 56 in towels, which we recommend, are sold through both. It is specification versus specification. The four below are the towels we would put next to each Walmart tier.
Four alternatives at the same tiers, each publishing the numbers Walmart's lines leave out. Live prices and the date checked sit on each card.

Hotel feel at a hotel-supply price
Chakir Turkish Linens Hotel & Spa Bath Towel

The everyday workhorse
American Soft Linen 600 GSM Turkish Cotton Bath Towel
A 600 GSM Turkish-cotton towel with double-stitched long edges, sitting in the weight band that stays absorbent without taking all day to dry.

Cheapest towel still worth owning
Utopia Towels Ring-Spun Cotton Bath Towels
Amazon's volume seller, and the reason it works is unglamorous: ring-spun cotton rather than the open-end cotton most budget terry uses.

- Against Mainstays at 438 GSM: Utopia's ring-spun cotton towels. Similar price tier, and ring spinning is the one construction detail that reliably separates a cheap towel that settles down from one that sheds forever.
- Against Better Homes & Gardens: Chakir's Hotel & Spa towel at 550-600 GSM in 100% long-staple Turkish cotton, OEKO-TEX certified. Published weight, published staple class, no viscose.
- Against Hotel Style at 650 GSM: American Soft Linen's 600 GSM Turkish cotton towel, which publishes weight, fiber, size, double-stitched sides and OEKO-TEX certification -- the most complete specification in that band.
- If you want the plush end: White Classic's 700 GSM long-staple combed cotton, which is stocked at Walmart as well as on Amazon. Combing is the step that removes the short fibers that become lint.
What Walmart does well, and where it does not
Two genuine strengths. The first is that the tiers are honestly differentiated -- the entry line publishes a low weight rather than hiding it, and the top line publishes a high one. Plenty of retailers blur that deliberately. The second is restock reliability: these lines sit in the range for years, which means you can top a bathroom up in three years and get the same towel. That is worth more than it sounds, because bathrooms are furnished in sets and replaced one towel at a time.
The weakness is the middle tier. Better Homes & Gardens is the line most people will buy and the one that publishes least: a blend with no weight. If you are spending mid-tier money, that is exactly the band where a published GSM and a staple class change the outcome.
The Costco towel guide and the Target towel guide run the same exercise on the other two big-box ranges, and the three together make the pattern clear: the top tier usually publishes, the middle tier usually does not.
The one-line verdict
Buy Mainstays if you want a cheap, light, fast-drying towel and know that is what you are getting. Buy Hotel Style's Egyptian cotton set if you want weight and are prepared for the drying time. Skip the middle tier unless you can find a published GSM for it, because a blended towel with no weight is the one purchase on the shelf you cannot evaluate before it arrives.
Frequently asked questions
Are Walmart bath towels any good?
The top tier is. Hotel Style's six-piece Egyptian cotton set publishes 650 GSM, 100% Egyptian cotton loops and a 58 x 30 in bath towel, which is a complete specification. Mainstays is an honest light towel at a published 438 GSM. The Better Homes & Gardens middle tier publishes no weight at all, which is the one to be careful with.
What GSM are Mainstays towels?
The Mainstays 100% cotton bath towel publishes 438 GSM at 52 x 27 in. That is a light-to-medium towel: it dries quickly, which is a real advantage in a small bathroom, and it will feel thin next to a 600 GSM towel.
What is the best towel line at Walmart?
Hotel Style, specifically the six-piece Egyptian cotton striped set at a published 650 GSM with 58 x 30 in bath towels. It is the only Walmart own-brand line that publishes both a weight and a specific fiber claim about the loops rather than the whole product.
Are Better Homes & Gardens towels 100% cotton?
Not the Signature Soft Solid line -- it is 90% US cotton and 10% viscose at 30 x 56 in. The viscose is there for softness. It is also weaker when wet than cotton, which is the state a towel spends its working life in, so it is the component that breaks down first.
Is Hotel Style Egyptian cotton real Egyptian cotton?
The listing states 100% Egyptian cotton loops, which is a claim about the pile specifically rather than the whole product -- that is more precise than most. Bear in mind Egyptian cotton is a geographic term, not a protected quality grade: it says where the cotton was grown, not how long the staple is.
Does Walmart sell the same towels as Amazon?
Some of them, yes. White Classic's 30 x 56 in luxury towels are stocked through both, which makes the useful comparison specification against specification rather than retailer against retailer.
