The Best Waffle Towels, and the Spec Most Brands Will Not Print

Waffle is the weave that wins in a bathroom with no window. Here are the five worth owning -- and the shrinkage figure you need to read before you measure anything.

Buy a waffle towel if your bathroom dries towels badly -- the open cell structure means air moves through the cloth instead of around it, and brands variously claim it dries in half the time of terry or up to 40% faster. Onsen's Supima waffle towel is our pick, because it is the only one of these five that publishes a weight and the only one made from extra-long-staple cotton. Before you order any of them, read the shrinkage figure: two of the five tell you to expect 12-15%, which means the towel on the shelf is not the towel you will own.

Waffle towels get recommended for the wrong reason. They are sold as a design object -- the honeycomb looks considered, it photographs well, and it reads as Scandinavian regardless of where it was woven. That is all true and none of it matters.

The reason to own one is mechanical. A terry towel is a dense forest of loops that holds water by surface area and then keeps holding it, which is why a heavy terry towel in a bathroom with no airflow is damp when you next need it. A waffle towel is a thin cloth with a grid of pockets, and air passes straight through it. In a windowless bathroom that difference decides whether your towels are pleasant or whether they are a smell you have learned to live with.

What a waffle weave actually is

Waffle, also sold as honeycomb, is a dobby weave: the warp and weft are arranged so that groups of threads float over each other and the cloth pulls itself into raised ridges and recessed squares. The result is a fabric with real three-dimensional structure but very little pile -- the opposite of terry, where extra yarn is fed in and pushed up into loops.

Two consequences follow, and they explain everything else on this page. First, the cells hold a surprising amount of water for how thin the cloth is, because the walls and floors of each pocket all count as surface. Second, every one of those pockets is open to the air on one side, so evaporation happens throughout the cloth rather than only at the outer faces. Softerry is explicit that its towels arrive flat and only develop the honeycomb after washing, which is a good description of how the structure forms.

What you give up is plushness. There is no deep pile to sink into, because a deep pile is exactly the thing waffle has removed. If being wrapped in something thick is the point of a towel for you, stop here and read the terry picks instead -- no amount of good waffle will change your mind. The full weave comparison sets out the trade in detail.

What we judged these on

Five criteria, in this order. Waffle is a category where the marketing is unusually far ahead of the disclosure, so most of these are about what the brand is willing to tell you.

  1. Published fiber, with a staple class if there is one. A thin towel has less cotton in it, so each fiber matters more. Extra-long-staple cotton in a light cloth is the combination that makes a thin towel durable -- the argument in full is in the long-staple picks. Four of these five name the fiber; one names the staple class.
  2. A published weight, or an honest admission there is not one. Waffle is the worst category on the site for this. Only Onsen publishes a figure. Everybody else says "lightweight" and leaves you to guess, which is why our table says "not published" five times rather than inventing numbers. The GSM guide explains what the number would tell you if you had it.
  3. A stated shrinkage figure. Waffle shrinks more than terry, because the weave tightens as the cells set. Two of these brands publish 12-15% and cut the towel oversized to compensate. A brand that publishes neither a finished size nor a shrinkage figure is the one to be careful with.
  4. A hanging loop or a size that suits your rail. A waffle towel dried folded in four is a slow towel, and the whole advantage is gone. A sewn loop is a small thing that tells you the maker understood the product.
  5. Honest care instructions. Several of these towels come with care limits that conflict with a standard white-towel routine. We would rather a brand tell us not to bleach its towel than discover it.

The five, side by side

Published figures only. "Not published" means the brand does not state it -- nothing here is estimated.

The shrinkage catch, and how to order around it

This is the part that catches people, and it is not a defect -- it is a consequence of the weave that the better brands handle openly.

A waffle cloth leaves the loom relatively flat and tightens as the cells set, which happens in the first wash. Gilden Tree states 12-15% shrinkage and cuts its towel at 32 x 62 in specifically to allow for it. Softerry states the same 12-15% range at 30 x 60 in. Neither figure is unusual; what is unusual is publishing it.

Two practical consequences. First, measure after the first wash, not on arrival, and do not return a towel for being too big. Second, when you are choosing between two waffle towels and one of them publishes a finished size while the other publishes a pre-wash size, you are not comparing like with like -- a 32 in pre-wash towel and a 30 in finished towel end up at roughly the same place.

Wash a new waffle towel on its own before it joins the rotation. That is good practice for any new towel, for the reasons in how to wash new towels, and it matters more here because the cells need a full cycle to form and because the first wash is where the dye runs if it is going to.

Where waffle beats terry, and where it loses

The honest scorecard. Neither weave wins outright.
What you care aboutWaffleTerry
Dry time on the railMuch faster -- brands claim half the time, or up to 40% quickerSlow, and slower the heavier it is
Going musty in a windowless bathroomRarely, because air passes through the clothThe usual culprit
Plushness and the wrapped-up feelingNot its strengthThis is what terry is for
Packing for travel or a gym bagFolds very smallTakes up a third of the bag
Lint on your skin and in the dryerVery little -- there is barely any pile to shedMore, and much more if the cotton is short-staple
Snagging on a ring or a rough nailMore vulnerable: the ridges catchLoops catch too, but there is more cloth to lose
Drying a lot of hairWorks, but you will feel the thinnessBetter, or use a dedicated option from the hair towel picks

The pattern is consistent: waffle wins everything to do with water leaving the towel, and terry wins everything to do with the towel feeling substantial. If your complaint about your current towels is that they smell or stay damp, waffle is the answer and the weave change will do more than any detergent. If your complaint is that they feel thin, waffle is the wrong direction entirely.

Washing and drying a waffle towel

Mostly the same rules as any towel, with three differences worth knowing.

No fabric softener, and this matters more than on terry. Softener coats the fiber in a thin water-repellent film. On a thick terry towel that costs you absorbency you can afford to lose; on a thin waffle towel there is far less cloth in the first place, and a coated waffle towel stops working rather than merely working less well. How to soften towels covers the alternatives, none of which involve softener.

Check the temperature the brand allows before you commit to white. Viva Maison specifies a warm wash at 104 F and no bleach. That is a reasonable instruction for a dyed towel and it is incompatible with the hot-wash, oxygen-bleach routine in how to keep white towels white. If you want white waffle towels you can restore rather than replace, buy a towel whose care label permits the routine you intend to use.

Dry it open, not folded. A waffle towel folded in four on a short rail is a terry towel with worse absorbency: you have blocked the airflow that is the entire reason you bought it. Hang it full length, or over a hook by its loop, and it will be dry long before a terry towel would be. Everything in how to dry towels faster applies, and applies harder.

Who should not buy a waffle towel

  • Anyone who wants to be wrapped in something thick. This is not a flaw to work around. Buy a 600-700 GSM terry towel and enjoy it.
  • Households with long nails, rings or a splintery rail. The ridges snag more readily than a terry loop does, and a pulled thread on a waffle towel is more visible.
  • Anyone who needs a towel to dry a lot of long hair. It works, but you will notice the lack of mass. The hair towel picks choose on friction and lint instead.
  • Anyone buying for a rental with no drying rail. Waffle's advantage needs air. Without somewhere to hang it open, you have paid for a thin towel and got nothing back. The Airbnb picks weigh this properly.
  • Anyone who wants certified organic cotton. The organic waffle towel here states the claim without naming a certification. If an audit is why you are buying organic, buy a GOTS-certified terry towel instead.

Waffle in the rest of the bathroom

The weave works even better on the pieces that are smaller and wetter. A waffle hand towel beside a basin is used a dozen times a day and dries between each use, which is the single most useful place to put the weave. Onsen sells its waffle as a three-piece set for this reason, and that set is one of the picks on the hand towel roundup.

Robes are the other obvious one, and the logic is identical: a waffle robe is light, dries on its hook, and does not sit damp between mornings. The waffle robe picks cover that, and waffle versus terry robes is the same argument in a different garment. Going the other way, if what drew you to waffle was dry time rather than the look, the quick-dry towel roundup includes ribbed and low-twist terry options that get some of the same benefit with more mass.

If it was Onsen specifically that brought you here, our review of the brand goes into its Supima sourcing and the published weights across the range in more depth than a roundup entry allows.

The one-line verdict

Buy the Onsen if you want the best-documented waffle towel and are willing to pay for extra-long-staple cotton; buy the Cotton Craft four-pack if you want to convert a whole bathroom cheaply; buy the Gilden Tree if dry time is the only thing you care about. And in every case, read the shrinkage figure before you pick a size.

What we like

  • The waffle structure holds the towel open to air, which is why it dries so much faster than terry at the same weight
  • Supima is extra-long-staple -- the strongest cotton you can buy in a towel
  • Lint-free enough to use on glass and skin without leaving fibers behind

What we do not

  • Waffle does not feel plush -- it feels textured and slightly crisp
  • Expensive per towel compared with the Turkish-cotton terry field

How it holds up

Extra-long-staple Supima plus an open weave is the combination that ages best in a damp bathroom, because the towel spends less of its life wet. Most towel failure is really mildew and repeated slow drying, not wear.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you want to wrap up in something soft after a bath. This is a towel for drying efficiently, not for lounging.

What we like

  • The brand states it dries in half the time of a traditional terry towel
  • Listed as lint-free and snag-free -- the two things that make a waffle towel annoying
  • Cut oversized on purpose so the stated shrinkage lands at a usable size
  • Thin enough to fold small for a suitcase or a gym bag

What we do not

  • No published weight, so you cannot compare it against a terry towel on mass
  • A stated 12-15% shrinkage means the size you measure on arrival is not the size you keep
  • The honeycomb cells exfoliate, which not everyone wants on skin
  • The most expensive per towel of the mainstream waffle options

How it holds up

Waffle fails at the raised cell wall, which takes nearly all of the abrasion. A thin waffle has less yarn in those walls than a heavy one, so the trade here is dry time against structure: this towel will stay fresh in a bathroom that would turn a terry towel sour, and it will show wear at the cell edges sooner than a mid-weight terry towel would.

Who should skip it

Skip it if what you want from a towel is to be wrapped in something plush. This is a drying tool, and it does not pretend otherwise.

What we like

  • Bath-sheet dimensions at waffle weight -- the one combination terry cannot give you
  • A sewn hanging loop on every towel, which is how a waffle towel is supposed to be dried
  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tested, with the weaving location named
  • Matching hand towels, washcloths and sets in the same twelve colors, so a bathroom can be completed later

What we do not

  • No published weight, so it cannot be compared on mass
  • The brand specifies a warm wash at 104 F and no bleach, which rules out our hot-wash whitening routine for white towels
  • At 71 in long it needs a full-length rail; folded over a short rail it dries slowly, which defeats the point
  • Turkish long-staple cotton rather than extra-long-staple, so it is not the most durable thin towel here

How it holds up

Turkish cotton is long-staple, which is the right fiber class for a thin towel, and the open weave means every part of the cloth gets air. The limiting factor is the care instruction: a towel washed warm rather than hot, and never bleached, keeps its structure longer but accumulates body oils faster, so it needs the oxygen-bleach routine rather than the chlorine one.

Who should skip it

Skip it if your rail is short or your bathroom is small -- this is a large towel, and a large waffle towel folded in half is just a slow-drying towel.

What we like

  • Combed and ring-spun, both named on the listing -- two real processing steps at a budget price
  • Four towels, so a two-person bathroom switches to waffle in one order
  • 30 x 56 in is generous for a mainstream towel, not the 27 x 52 in that budget sets usually mean
  • The most replaceable towel here: a long-running range item in several colors

What we do not

  • No published weight and no certification on the listing
  • The listing describes an "absorbent high pile", which is terry language applied to a waffle towel -- expect something denser than a specialist waffle
  • Combed ring-spun cotton with no staple class or origin named, so the fiber quality is the one thing you are taking on trust
  • Waffle pockets catch lint shed by other laundry, and a cheaper waffle catches more of it

How it holds up

Combing and ring spinning are the two steps that matter most at this price, and this listing names both -- which is why it is here rather than one of the many unspecified waffle sets. Expect it to behave like a mid-weight waffle: faster drying than terry, less dramatic than a thin specialist waffle, and showing wear at the cell edges before anywhere else.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you are buying waffle specifically for the fast-drying, feather-light feel. This is the sensible middle, not the extreme.

What we like

  • Organic cotton in a waffle weave, which is a genuinely thin part of the market
  • The brand states up to 40% faster drying than a regular terry towel
  • Listed as fade-resistant and lint-free, which matters more on waffle than on terry
  • 30 x 60 in is real coverage without going to bath-sheet length

What we do not

  • The organic claim names no certification, so it is a brand statement rather than a GOTS or OEKO-TEX audit
  • A stated 12-15% shrinkage, so the towel you keep is noticeably smaller than the towel you unwrap
  • The brand's own listing warns of a natural fiber scent out of the package until the first wash
  • The care note tells you to snip pulled threads rather than pull them -- an honest admission that this weave snags

How it holds up

A waffle towel whose cells form on first wash is a flat-woven cloth that develops structure, which is why the first wash matters more here than on a terry towel. The brand's instruction to cut rather than pull a loose thread is the right advice for any waffle, and the fact that they print it tells you where this towel will show its age: at the cell walls, as pulled threads rather than as thinning.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you want a certified organic textile on paper. The fiber claim here is the brand's own, and if certification is the reason you are buying organic, buy a GOTS-certified terry towel instead.

Frequently asked questions

Are waffle towels better than terry towels?

Better at drying themselves, worse at feeling plush. The open cell structure lets air pass through the cloth, so waffle towels dry much faster on the rail and rarely go musty -- brands claim half the dry time of terry, or up to 40% faster. What you give up is pile, and with it the sensation of being wrapped in something thick. In a windowless bathroom waffle is the better towel; in a well-ventilated one it is a preference.

Do waffle towels absorb water well?

Yes, better than their thinness suggests, because the walls and floors of every cell count as absorbent surface. What they do not do is hold a large volume of water the way a heavy terry towel does -- they move water off you and then release it to the air quickly. For one adult after a shower that is plenty; for drying a lot of long hair you will notice the lack of mass.

Do waffle towels shrink a lot?

More than terry, and the better brands say so. Gilden Tree and Softerry both state 12-15% shrinkage and cut their towels oversized to allow for it. The shrinkage happens as the honeycomb cells set in the first wash, which is also when the structure properly forms. Measure your towel after the first wash rather than on arrival.

How long do waffle towels last?

As long as a comparable terry towel, but they age differently. Terry thins at the folds; waffle takes its abrasion on the raised ridges, so you get pulled threads and a gradually flatter honeycomb instead of a thin patch. Snip a pulled thread rather than pulling it -- that is Softerry's own instruction and it is right for every waffle towel.

What is the best waffle towel?

Onsen's Supima waffle bath towel, on the documentation. It is the only one of our five picks that publishes a weight (about 410 GSM, stated as 16.5 oz) and the only one made from extra-long-staple cotton, which is what makes a thin towel durable. If price is the constraint, Cotton Craft's Euro Spa four-pack in combed ring-spun cotton converts a whole bathroom for much less.

Can you bleach waffle towels?

Check the care label first, because several waffle brands say no. Viva Maison specifies a warm wash at 104 F and no bleach. If you want white waffle towels you intend to restore with an oxygen-bleach routine rather than replace, choose a towel whose own care instructions permit a hot wash -- otherwise you are choosing between keeping them white and following the label.

Are waffle towels good for travel?

They are the best weave for it. A waffle towel folds much smaller than a terry towel of the same coverage, weighs less in a bag, and dries overnight in a hotel bathroom. Gilden Tree markets its towel on exactly that -- thin enough for a suitcase, a camper or a boat -- and the same reasoning drives our Turkish towels for travel picks.
